“Stay still.”

“But-”

“Still.”

Sergei let out a resigned sigh as he obediently stopped squirming, letting his hands drop to his sides so as to let Nikolai finish buttoning up the front of his crisp blue dress shirt. They were standing in front of the full-length mirror by the wardrobe in their bedroom and Sergei looked over his lover’s shoulder as Nik secured the final button at his collar, seeing the long-suffering expression on his own face.

“Now, tie.”

Sergei rolled his eyes.

“For chrissakes Nikky, I’m a grown man, I can dress myself-”

“Fur coat,” Nikolai replied, flatly. Sergei’s protests didn’t deter him from picking up the blue-and-grey striped tie hanging on the back of a chair, and a smile touched his lips as Sergei’s cheeks flushed a delicate pink.

“I liked that coat. I still don’t see why you had to give it away…”

“It was ugly.”

“It was not ugly!”

“You’re right, bad description. It was horrendous.”

“Nik!”

But Nikolai shushed him absently, and Sergei quieted to grumbles as his lover reached behind him to loop the tie around his neck, bringing the ends to the front so he could knot it. His fingers worked the thin strip of fabric deftly and Sergei found himself sufficiently distracted to stop complaining, watching as Nik calmly did his tie for him. When his lover looked up, those grey eyes were settled and affectionate in a quiet contentedness that Sergei hadn’t quite noticed there before, and he found himself drowning in them as Nik pulled the knot snug against his throat.

“I love you,” he offered, simply, searching that grey gaze. Nikolai smiled at him and leaned in to press their lips together, still holding on to Sergei’s tie.

“I love you too. Coat, and then we can go.”

Sergei nodded, waiting quietly as Nik went around him to pick up his suit jacket from where it lay on the bed. He stretched out his arms and watched in the mirror as Nikolai slipped the garment on him, smoothing his hands across Sergei’s shoulders in a fond caress. He let out a quiet sigh as Nik reached around him to button up the front of his jacket, tilting his head to bare his throat as a tender kiss was pressed against the side of his neck.

Nikolai raised his head and caught Sergei’s eyes in the mirror, and when he trailed his finger down Sergei’s arm to his palm to twine their hands together, both of them smiled, lovingly, wordlessly.

Because words were unneeded.
