Take it on the Otherside

+ So now that Metroid: Other M has been out, there's been reviews out too.

The "good" reviews are being overwhelmed by the "okay" and "mediocre" reviews so far. GameInformer gave it some harsh words calling it the "worst Nintendo game for a while now". Though after seeing a handful of clips I think they have the right to be disappointed. The gameplay can be a hassle - to switch from 3rd person to 1st person you have to switch between tilting the Wiimote to the side and pointing it at the screen. And while in 1st person, you can't move your body.

But the core of the game's problem doesn't lie in gameplay but rather in the story and presentation. The graphics are drop-dead gorgeous no doubt, but the characterization and dialogue is no where as good. How Samus was made as a character in this game is quite insulting to those who respect her (including myself). Her dialogue mostly consists of expository monologues that drag on and on and on, and when she does actually speak it's uncolorful and it mentions the obvious.

Finally, Samus' behavior and actions are a stake to the heart. There's this ex-commander of hers in the game named Adam that she obviously has a strong connection with, whether it be a master-servant obedience thing or she just really loves him. Either way, she decides that she wants to do everything Adam says. Oh, and you know how in the beginning of a Metroid game you lose your weapons and have to get them back? You already have your weapons at the start, but because Samus wants to please Adam so much, she decides not to use any of them unless Adam says so. This destroys what we respect about Samus (independence and strength) so much it makes the experience nasty in taste. An immature, naive and dependent Samus is NOT the Samus Aran we love. Lastly, how long is the game?

10 hours.
