the moon hangs high outside our barracks tonight. it's almost full, and seems brighter than usual. the silver light filters through the window in our living room and gives enough ambient light to type. clear air, diamond-specked sky. just gorgeous.
my crew brothers are in bed, and i should be, too. unfortunately, i am the only geek with net access and so i am trying to keep current on the latest developments with the SoCal Complex fires. we have been waiting for our resource order to come through to be reactivated and assigned to one of the SoCal fires.
today was our Lassen Forest District Meeting and this is usually the final 'party' before we are laid-off from duty. as our crew was walking to the conference room, our Captain yelled 'Scotty!! Turn the crew around and go back to warehouse and engine bays!'. The 'warehouse' is our fire station complex. It combines two engine bays, our crew carrier area, and our 'caches' where we keep all the spare equipment. we knew something was going on.
needless to say, the tension today was intense. so intense that several of us almost requested to be dropped from the resource order. however as usual, we all bucked up and said YES!!!
because the bottom line is, SoCal is burning up. Chester is not.
And we are wildland firefighters. We are just waiting for our Resource Order. Ready, waiting and willing to go into the depths of hell to help and assist as best we can.
My prayers and thoughts go out to everyone in SoCal. I'll do my best to help. It is what I am trained for and what I love. Hell, you might even see us.
Be well, be safe, and we'll be there just as soon as we can.
