(070) ; their hands fit together perfectly, yet things aren’t perfect.

He felt the grimace form on his face, even when he had desperately been trying to fight it. That familiar anxious feeling was bubbling in his stomach, a vile taste in his mouth making it even harder to swallow it all away. Howon would always remember this night.

At eight past two he saw the flickering lights fading away, the sound of the little wheels rolling on the asphalt haunting him. Woohyun told him that he should go and sleep, otherwise those bags under his eyes would never go away.

“You have this aged look. It’s ugly.”

“Yeah. Well. Not everyone wants to be handsome like you.”

“You think I’m handsome?”

“Tsk. As if.”

“Go to bed Howon.”

“I shouldn’t.”

“It will be alright.”

Woohyun gave him that smile, the one that made everything brighter and on any other day Howon would believe in it. But then Woohyun’s lips twisted downward as he was wheeled over a small bump and Howon didn’t really believe in anything anymore.

That night he couldn’t sleep. All he could think about was a pale face, dark eyes pleading with him to let him go, cold fingers slipping from his grip.

He wished he could stay in that moment forever - no, he wished he could skip back to the day before and stop time, so everything would be alright forever. He already missed Woohyun and the way Woohyun’s breath would tickle his ear, the warm body pressed against his, securing him tightly against a broad chest and luring him into a deep sleep.

He was scared to go to sleep and wake up, because tomorrow would never be the same as yesterday.

“You can’t give up.”

He was clutching Woohyun’s hand in his, hoping that if he hold on long enough, all bad things moving inside of Woohyun would transfer to him.

“If you give up now… You need to be okay,” he whispered.

Woohyun looked into his eyes then, as he softly wiped the tears away from Howon’s cheeks. “But maybe it’s okay like this.”

His fingers fit perfectly in between Woohyun’s. It was one of the first things Howon noticed when they held hands. On a day in May, Woohyun had grabbed his hand and pulled him along to one of the food stalls. They only noticed they were still holding hands when they both reached out to grab the plate of food. Howon had pulled away embarrassed, feeling the eyes of the people around them burning into his skull.

“Sorry for…you know. I didn’t realize we were still…”

“No. It’s alright.”

“I promise I won’t do it again.”

“Hmhm.”

“Unless you want to…do it again?”

Needless to say, after that Woohyun held his hand whenever he could. His fingers would reach out for Howon’s, fiddling around until they fit perfectly. It reminded Howon of tying a knot - Woohyun would only stop once their fingers were secured tightly.

As his fingers trace over Woohyun’s - a lifetime later - he notices how much has changed. Smooth hands have become wrinkled and calloused. Deep lines at the top of his hands, marking bad memories and late nights in a cold room, desperation and loss.

But one thing hasn’t changed and as their fingers curl together and find their rightful spots, a small smile spreads on Howon’s face.

“Still perfect,” he whispers.

Woohyun smile lights up the entire room and Howon can’t help but grin back at him.

“You’re going to be alright? No sleepless night and coming back with dark bags under your eyes tomorrow, right?” Woohyun asks him.

Howon nods, looking at their hands.

“You promise?”

Woohyun holds out his right hand, his pinky sticking up. Howon smiles and links their pinkies together.

“Promise.”
