[He snapped out of his droning a few hours ago.

-and then hadn't said a word about it, quietly checking a calendar- (Missed my own fuckin' birthday? Tch)- and ensuring that Taiwan continued to sleep safely in their bed. He'd silently checked on Saki and Mindy, as well, pausing only briefly at their doorways before gently picking up Chocomeltje ( Read more... )

*She's gotten into the custom of going to his house early every morning, just when he - no, his drone - is getting up and going outside in the early sunlight. She goes to check if he's returned to himself yet, and she goes to make sure that the drone is taking care of Chocomeltje (and to give the poor bunny someone familiar to be with.

He's not there this morning, which is strange. He's always there. And the door isn't fully shut. Inside the house, Chocomeltje's cage is empty - and now that she looks for it, his car isn't in the driveway.

She can see headlights up at the top of the hill overlooking town. It's such a minor coincidence that it almost feels stupid to her to check. But this wasn't like the drone, so ...

... she starts running down the streets as fast as she can headed for the promontory where she'd seen the headlights. And after a while, Netherlands might hear some footsteps running up the hill behind him in the shadows.

And then the sounds of his sister trying to catch her breath from the run - but she'd recognize that silhouette anywhere.*

[And he turns, and he looks at her, and for a moment he thinks fuck and nearly gets in the car to drive away again, because what is he supposed to say to her? He doesn't know why he was a drone or why it lasted this long or how to apologize.

Because that's what he needs to do, he knows. Apologize to her, because he broke a promise. Apologize for abandoning her.

Maybe that's why he's come here instead of facing her, ever hesitant to expose his heart, because such a thing is a trifle he pretends not to have at all.]

*It's HIM, and there's no mistaking it from the look he gives her. Belgium just looks at his eyes, not moving or saying a word or even breathing; she balls her hands into fists reflexively.

What the hell is she supposed to do? Supposed to say? Supposed to FEEL? She'd felt a deep, cavernous hollow within her chest without him there with her, but now that he was here... he was back here in this stupid, godforsaken town that she hated. Maybe he'd been safe. Maybe he'd been back home. How could she be happy for that?

She doesn't know what to feel. She unballs her hands and just looks at him quietly as tears begin to well up in her eyes.*

...I broke it.

[He inclines his head a little- enough to look at the ground and not her.]

Y'shouldn't have trusted me.

[If you ever did to begin with, he thinks, because doubt will always lick up at the edges of his mind like fire when it comes to her. She has no reason to trust him or his word even when he'd like nothing more than for her to blindly do so.]

*Even if he did, can she blame them? This town can make them do anything. It wasn't his fault that it happened; it was this town's, and nobody could have fought it.

She clenches her fists again. But he was gone, and now he's back and--*

How... how can you say that? *Her voice is shaky and slightly throaty*

[The sad part is that he sees this as his fault entirely, and nothing she can say will make him truly change his mind, stubborn and emotionally walled as he is]

I keep makin' you cry.

[And he doesn't mean to. Of course he doesn't mean to. But he always inevitably does.]

*She doesn't have an answer to that. He does; she can't refute it. But...* You're still my brother.

Who should I trust if it ain't you?

If you're tellin' me I can't trust you, then you better tell me who I can trust.

...You're the only one. You know that. That's how life is. [just you, he thinks. didn't you want independence?]

You can believe that, if you want. Doesn't mean I gotta.

...I don't care that you make me cry. *Well, she does. Just not when it comes to this.* Guess you still don't get it, huh.

[Silence. His look implores her to explain: No. I don't get it. I don't get you.]

*Belgium looks like she's going to speak and in fact takes a breath but then falters under that look, stumbling before the words even come out. Maybe she isn't even sure what she was going to say herself.*

*Softly, almost mumbled* Yer my brother. That's... that's all.
