He's not there this morning, which is strange. He's always there. And the door isn't fully shut. Inside the house, Chocomeltje's cage is empty - and now that she looks for it, his car isn't in the driveway.
She can see headlights up at the top of the hill overlooking town. It's such a minor coincidence that it almost feels stupid to her to check. But this wasn't like the drone, so ...
... she starts running down the streets as fast as she can headed for the promontory where she'd seen the headlights. And after a while, Netherlands might hear some footsteps running up the hill behind him in the shadows.
And then the sounds of his sister trying to catch her breath from the run - but she'd recognize that silhouette anywhere.*

Because that's what he needs to do, he knows. Apologize to her, because he broke a promise. Apologize for abandoning her.
Maybe that's why he's come here instead of facing her, ever hesitant to expose his heart, because such a thing is a trifle he pretends not to have at all.]

What the hell is she supposed to do? Supposed to say? Supposed to FEEL? She'd felt a deep, cavernous hollow within her chest without him there with her, but now that he was here... he was back here in this stupid, godforsaken town that she hated. Maybe he'd been safe. Maybe he'd been back home. How could she be happy for that?
She doesn't know what to feel. She unballs her hands and just looks at him quietly as tears begin to well up in her eyes.*

[If you ever did to begin with, he thinks, because doubt will always lick up at the edges of his mind like fire when it comes to her. She has no reason to trust him or his word even when he'd like nothing more than for her to blindly do so.]
