Watched the movie [Avatar] in 3D yesterday!
Shockingly, I LOVED it. O_O
Firstly, I am NOT a fan of sci-fi movies, or books even. Secondly, the 2D trailer for the movie really sucked, if I may say so. Thirdly, I was totally sceptical of all those claims about the movie being a "breakthrough" and all.
However, after having watched it, I have to say that I am GLAD to be proven wrong. The movie IS amazing!
Plot
The story centres on a crippled ex-Marine called Jake Sully. After Jake's twin brother was slain, Jake was called in to finish the job. Jake's twin brother had been working for the scientific arm of a mega corporation trying to mine the planet of Pandora for valuable ore. Unfortunately the biggest deposit of the prized substance lies underneath the home of the Na'vi, a 10-foot tall, blue-skinned native tribe who have been at war with the security arm of the company, lead by Col. Miles Quaritch.
Jake soon finds out that the scientific division has devised an ingenious way of fitting into the hostile planet. They had grown these half-alien/half-human Na'vi bodies into which the scientists can transfer their consciousness and control the bodies. When in the Na'vi bodies, the scientists then can try to communicate with the Na'vi aliens and gain better understanding of the planet Pandora. Unfortunately, both the military and the rich bosses are running out of patience and beginning to feel that violence is the only solution to getting rid of the Na'vi.
After meeting and gaining the trust of the Na'vi Princess Neytiri, Jake begins to be drawn deeper and deeper into the remarkable world of Pandora, which is unlike anything he has experienced before. Torn between Pandora and his own human world when the battle lines are drawn, Jake needs to decide which side he will fight on when the time comes.
What's There To Love
- The 3D film-making is REALLY good here. I've watched a couple of 3D movies before, and they'd been okay. However, [Avatar] has been filmed SPECIFICALLY in 3D and so you feel like you are IN the movie itself! That's why I keep telling people I know to watch the movie in 3D, because that is the WHOLE point of the movie! I'm not saying that you won't enjoy the movie in traditional 2D, but I'm suspecting that if you do that, the movie just won't feel the same. And oh, for those who've been feeling that the Na'vi look fake (I felt the same way when I watched the trailer!), trust me, they look real when you're watching in 3D. In fact, the blend between live action and computer effects is totally seamless in the movie!
- The planet of Pandora is nothing short of astounding. The Na'vi people are extremely attuned to their surroundings, in ways that we humans would never be with our own world. I shall not spoil it for those who have not watched the movie, but after watching the movie, I totally wanted to be Na'vi! It's just the whole idea of being able to connect to nature. Also, since Pandora is an alien planet, everything in that world is entirely different and so the imagination of the creators of the movie come into play. And let's put it this way - they DO have wonderful imaginations! The creatures and plants and even the Na'vi themselves are amazingly brought to life.
- The storyline is simple and direct. I'm guessing that some viewers will not appreciate the fact that the lines are so clearly drawn between the good and the bad sides. But sometimes in movies, you just feel the need to take sides. Know what I mean?
