Study, Nikogaku, Study! - Epilogue (sequel to The Gay Thing)

Author : Wind Chijmes
Website: Wind Chijmes Pavilion
Rating : PG-13
Warnings : Slash (aka yaoi, boys' love), cussing, kissing
Pairings: Aniya/Mikoshiba, Okada/Yufune
Summary : Kawato-sensei decides the only way to get the boys to go to Koshien AND graduate at the same time is to have a study camp! Stuck with one another, tensions rise and confrontations are abound as the boys try to figure out their books, as well as this messy thing called relationships.

Author's Notes : It started as a oneshot, and sort of grew. Random fangirlism and Rookies love abound!

Boys and the whole concept of four-in-the-morning generally did not go well together.

A total of eight alarms were set, and still they woke up late at 0410 hours. Groaning, griping and cursing way too much for the early morning, they stumbled out of the club room in very sad-looking troops of twos and threes. Most had slept badly the night before, unable to fit their eighteen-year-old frames into the small couches and various nooks and crannies in the club room.

"Who the fuck thought of this stupid idea?!" Wakana snarled, the effect diminished by a huge yawn that followed right after. His normally well-coiffed pompadour was all but flattened by sleep and fitful tossing.

"We all did, dumbass," Hiyama growled in response, his eyes still closed in sleep, although his mouth was already alive and kicking.

Shinjo and Aniya, true to nature, were awake but thoroughly sullen about it. Both retreated into icy silence as they shrugged on their black uniform tops over their crumpled T-shirts. A little ahead of them, Mikoshiba and Sekikawa were more accustomed to waking early, and managed random chatter in their relatively-awake states.

"Where're the others?" Sekikawa mumbled between yawns. "Only six of us here."

"Already on the rooftop," Mikoshiba returned, rubbing at his eyes drowsily.

There was no more talk after that as the six of them paused at the stairs that would lead to their destination, stared upwards with some dismay, then dourly began the trek up. It did them some good. By the time they stepped foot on the rooftop, they were about twice as grouchy but much more wide awake.

"Oi, guys!"

The six of them were treated to the sight of a grinning Yufune half-draped over the railings, Imaoka in a lotus position and possibly meditating or just dead asleep, Okada slumped against the railings and almost dozing off, and Hiratsuka strutting around the whole rooftop and strumming an imaginary guitar as he sang at the top of his voice.

"Fuck this, I'm going back to sleep!" Wakana bristled and turned on his heels, only to be dragged struggling and kicking by the other five boys towards the railings.

"If we're gonna be doing something as wussy as watching the sun rise," Shinjo muttered as he helped haul the unwilling Wakana along. "We're sure as hell gonna do it together."

They didn't really figure out how they did it, but eventually all ten of them were draped over the railings, falling quiet as the sky began to lighten around them in washes of gold over indigo. The early morning was chilly, but somehow with the ten of them there, it didn't feel quite as cold. And they hadn't realised it until now, but when they stood up there looking down, the world felt a little smaller, and their goals just that bit closer to their reach.

In the midst of the quietness, Aniya turned his head and glanced at the figure next to him. His eyes fell to the boy's neck, then up again to meet Mikoshiba's questioning gaze.

"Nice hickey," Aniya whispered, keeping his face straight.

"Nice bruise," Mikoshiba shot back, expression completely neutral.

They moved at the same time; one boy raising a hand to poke at a vivid purple-black bruise on the cheek, and the other boy hastily pulling his uniform collar up to cover the discoloured patch on his neck. By the time they were done, Mikoshiba was trying his best to look composed, while Aniya contemplated the possible places to leave more discoloured patches.

"Guys, I've got something for you!"

Nine of them turned their heads curiously. Sometime in the midst of their sunrise-watching, Yufune had disentangled himself and disappeared, only to return with a large box. Okada hovered behind him, shuffling a little awkwardly.

"What's that? Beer?" Sekikawa piped up hopefully.

Yufune shook his head, bending down and peeling open the box, revealing -

Everyone craned their necks to see.

Paper planes.

"HAH?!" The boys yowled in disbelief and disappointment.

Yufune looked up and made a face at them. "Oi, I spent a long time doing them, nyaa!" His tone was as flippant as ever, but there was an undercurrent of edginess.

"Watch it, you guys..." Okada spoke up in wry warning. "He did spend a lot of time on those."

"I'm sure you did," Mikoshiba was the first to detach himself from the railings and head over to Yufune. He picked up one of the paper planes, and examined it with gentle fingers. "You even wrote our names and well-wishes on it." He looked genuinely touched.

"That's just for the first ten planes." Yufune tugged at his hair with a rueful laugh. "The others are just normal ones. I couldn't do such elaborate ones for all of 'em...I mean, I've already been cutting a lot of classes as it is..." He trailed off, then waved a hand dismissively and stood up. He looked at the others. "And you guys...you don't have to do anything with them. I mean, I just did 'em for fun. It doesn't mean anything. You don't - "

"Aw, shaddup, would you! I can't think through all your babble," Wakana said gruffly as he swaggered over, shoved aside the surprised Yufune, stuck his hands into the box and pulled out one of those delicate planes. At the other boys' dubious expressions, he looked at them and snorted. "If you ain't gonna get your own, don't come looking for me when I fly all of them."

That was the catalyst they needed.

Glancing at one another, the rest of the team debated internally for one second, before giving up the bravado and clambered over to the box. There were a few minutes of utter juvenile chaos as they tried to sort out their personal origami planes without busting a limb or two.

"Turned out pretty well, huh?" Okada murmured, lips twitching into a smile.

"Yeah!" Yufune breathed, relief in his eyes and a laugh in his voice. "Yeah..."

"Mine says..." Imaoka exclaimed. "'Wish you all the best in Chemistry', and 'Pitch with all your might'!"

"And mine...can't read your fucking handwriting, Yufune! Oh, 'Bat the asses off our rivals!'. Oi! You don't even need to say it!" Hiyama huffed. "Of course I'll do that! Don't doubt my new and improved batting prowess!"

"MINE SAYS 'GOOD LUCK WITH TOUKO-CHAN'! YUFUNE!" Hiratsuka whipped his head around and gazed at Yufune with huge, impassioned, quivering eyes. "I'LL PROFESS MY LOVE TO HER, I SWEAR ON MY LIFE!"

Sudden, deafening silence.

Yufune waved his hands helplessly at the others. "What, I couldn't think of anything else!"

"If he gets killed..." Aniya commented thoughtfully. "It's none of our fucking business..."

"What did you get?" Mikoshiba said quietly, interrupting Aniya's musings. He lifted his own plane and showed it to Aniya. Scrawled onto it were the words 'One and only Captain'. Mikoshiba swallowed, feeling his chest swell with some unnamed emotion. "I...didn't think..." He looked up and didn't feel the need to finish the rest of his words.

Aniya was giving him one of his rare, open smiles. "Some things just happen on their own. Don't think too much, Captain," he said, and his eyes flashed with a certain heat Mikoshiba was starting to realise was only ever directed at him. With that, Aniya tucked away his own paper plane in his hand.

"Eh?" Mikoshiba protested. "But you didn't tell me what's written on yours."

"No need to," Aniya shrugged, smile turning enigmatic, fingers brushing over his own plane, and the words 'Good luck with the Captain, you sneaky bastard'.

"Ready, everyone?" Yufune's voice called out above the cloud of chatter and good-natured bickering.

The sun had already risen on the horizon, first rays of dawn breaking over the darkness. Huddled on the rooftop of a school building somewhere in the city of Tokyo, ten young men raised their paper planes into the air.

"GO, NIKOGAKU, GO!"

A cloud of paper planes spiralled on the wind, across the waking city, their wings reflecting the morning light in all the right places.

More author's notes : I adore ALL the boys but this time round, I had to take the spotlight off some of them. If equal time is given to every Rookies boy, the fic will never end! I also focused more on the main pairings. Which I'm sure you know by now largely refers to Aniya/Miko (whom I love to death). Future fics (if I write them, I can't make promises) will likely be even more Aniya/Miko-centric, although I may occasionally deviate to Okada/Yufune because I really them too. ^^ And lastly, thank you for sitting through the fic! ^^ I appreciate it. ^^
