I really need to read the books. I have some that are in my reading queue (after the H.P. Lovecraft stuff that's been sitting for years waiting to be read!)
It refers to the "Discworld" series of books by Terry Pratchett. There are like 30-some-odd of them. I quite like "Equal Rites" and various of the Night Watch ones. (There are sort of series within series: Rincewind the Wizard, The Witches, Death, The Night Watch, Ancient Civilizations, The Industrial Revolution, etc.) I actually just found these in the last couple of months, before which, I would have no idea who Carrot Ironfounderson was.
That's the order I probably would rank them also. Picking a favorite character would be tough, but I think it would be between Sam Vimes and Granny. I love how well you can get to know the characters through so many stories, and they aren't static caricatures either.

I bemoan my non-geek status.

I would say my favorites are, in order, The Watch, The Witches, Death, and Rincewind.
