Apparently, he was diagnosed with lung cancer after he directed Lazarus Rising. Since he was meant to direct Family Remains, my guess is that he took a turn for the worse around the time they were shooting that. And... date of death is Jan. 25.

Yeah, that. He's been... I don't know. Everybody speaks about him with respect and admiration and... *sighs* I hadn't even read about the cancer.
