vassarlicious!

right off the bat, a big grin and tounge-wiggle to
driftingsoul, who gave me the new userpic i'm sporting and confirmed his planned presence for founda's. looks like corinne (and sarah thomas?) and i are gonna go up on friday 5/5 to see the mainstage Wildberger piece, before the debauchery of saturday begins. w&k, when will you be joining us?

managed to get to vassar for the first time since graduation this past weekend (yessir, about 10 and 1/2 months). i was terrified, impressed, and exhilirated by CLEANSED: never thought i'd see it rain in the shiva. some of the highest production values i've seen in a student-produced show. way to go UNBOUND, hannah/jacob/mo/hardysan/kendra, phillip, and the cast. the closing party was slated for the following night, but that didn't keep us from throwing an impromptu opening party! i was so glad i came up and saw everybody - definitely the best last minute trip idea ever. just regret that i hadn't done so sooner and with greater frequency this past year. the evening ended with tranquil passing of the peace-hookah with hardy, roecker, and a mightly sleepy moses, and i took off the next morning, delighted to have arisen in time for my morning-drive treat: McDonalds breakfast: sausage biscuit with egg, bacon, egg & cheese biscuit, a hashbrown, and coffee that only a coalminer could palate.

the drive up to vassar on the taconic inspired me to write another entry about the Robert Moses era, but i decided to spare you the boring details that only fans of momentous civil engineering projects slobber over (do you know what it TOOK to make that switchback alignment that runs along those sheer rock faces!?!?) ... suffice to say, it took 36 years to build (1927-1963), and it was not built by moses at all, as it was not in his jurisdiction, but by a gentleman named Franlklin D. Rooselvelt! ... who was at that time the chariman of the Taconic State Park Commission, under then governor Al Green (the man who dreamed up the Empire State Building). it is also interesting to note that the parkway (at least its lower half in westchester through dutchess counties) was intended STRICTLY as a RECREATIONAL roadway, where people would cruise along at 35 MPH, enjoying the scenery, stopping for a picnic at the roadside, etc. ... !!! ... and people wonder where the american "culture of the automobile" comes from. it was a different era, indeed.

so, gearing up for a weekend as a stagehand for paul taylor dance company, as they make their annual appearance at queens theater in the park. i love the company - saw them at citycenter last year - now i get to see them from the wings ... thrice! also, designing the lights for a show that will open on may 11 near astor place - my first legitimate design credit. i hope people can come see ... informative email to follow ... no comps, but worth the 18 bucks. it's four really funny one-act comedies strung together. i like it a lot. and am delighted to have enrolled the services of that ubiquitous off-broadway master electrician Corinne "Extension Ladder" Neal!

right. here's the front of the postcard:

i hate to sign off on a sad note, but five indiana university music students, two of whom were close friends of chris, died in a plane crash last week. whether you are the type who prays, meditates, thinks, or stares at peeling paint, lend a moment of your inner sanctuary to those that are gone and those who are left. and remember that your youth is not an infallible shield for quotidian dangers. don't walk truss without a harness, use the turnsignals that god gave you, and wear your fucking seatbelt. okay? okay.
