Deniz tells himself he doesn’t know why he does it and lying to himself is becoming easier every day. Nina’s in the kitchen making popcorn and his fingers dial the familiar number. Every time he’s sure Roman won’t answer and it fills him with dread even though he knows he shouldn’t want Roman to cling onto the past. But his heart always jumps with joy when the phone’s picked up on the other end.
Deniz never speaks, as if that made all this not his responsibility, and even Roman is strangely silent mostly, so Deniz just keeps listening to Roman’s breathing, trying to stifle the longing in his heart.
“Stop this.”
Roman is obviously drunk and Deniz runs a shaky hand through his black hair. Nina calls something from the kitchen but he’s too absorbed in trying to picture Roman’s face and eyes and skin and lips to hear.
“Please.” Roman’s voice breaks. “I can’t…”
Three words are on Deniz’s tongue but as Nina enters he quickly ends the call and makes room for her on the sofa, letting her snuggle up to him. And the words meant for Roman stumble out of his mouth making Nina glow with happiness.
