The Rhythm of the Night (Ana/Elizabeth)

On the morning after their first night on the island Elizabeth wakes just before dawn to the sound of drums outside the hut. She stretches in the still unfamiliar bed sleepily, for a moment ever so lightly confused at the lack of the ship rocking under her before she remembers where they are. A small smile plays in the corner of her lips as she presses her face against the pillow that still seduces her with the memory of her lover's scent.

The drumming envelops her in an invisible embrace, almost as if every beat came from inside her, as if the night's rhythm was trembling under her skin. Elizabeth sits up in bed and wraps the thin bed-sheet around her naked form, tying it under her arm before she cautiously pushes the door open. The darkness is still like a heavy cloak wrapped around the world but the first promise of dawn already paints the horizon crimson.

Sometimes Elizabeth wishes she could regret leaving social standing, a comfortable life, a father who would have given her anything but mornings like this remind her that despite the crudeness of a pirate's life she would never go back to the way things were. She runs her fingers through her short hair and breathes in deeply, letting the fresh air from the sea fill her lungs. Suddenly small hands take hers and a little girl with eyes black as coal, skin of the colour of the earth urges her to follow.

The drumming comes closer as they walk in the soft sand of the shore and now Elizabeth can hear singing too. Deep, raw, almost primal, and it sends the same chills down her spine as a storm out at sea. And suddenly, behind tall palm trees swaying in the wind, a group of people come into view, sitting around the dancing flames, their bodies moving to the rhythm of the drums, their dark faces half in shadow, half illuminated by the fire. Elizabeth shivers despite the warmth and can't do anything but watch in awe as they sing and move in unison, like they are part of one continuous wave, one suspended moment in the dark night.

Her eyes settle on her lover's face and Elizabeth could swear she had never seen anything more beautiful than Anamaria lost in the moment, moulding into one with her people. But then Ana looks up, their eyes meet, and a new wave of desire crawls under Elizabeth's skin at the intensity of her lover's gaze. Ana stands up, not taking her eyes off Elizabeth as they approach each other. Their kiss is slow and deep, yet tasting of passion and it leaves Elizabeth hungry for more.

"Come," Ana whispers against her lips, entwining her fingers with Elizabeth's. "You're one of us now."
