I saw this tonight for the first time after renting it at Blockbuster and yes I rented it because I knew Robert Sean Leonard was in it. I hope you all won't mind me talking a little about it.
How strange to see RSL looking so young (and lol I thought he looked young in House S1) - and he was so young in this I could have sworn I heard his voice crack a time or two. *ahem* Anyway after I got over the strangeness and was pulled into the story, I was in tears by the end because of how Neil killed himself. He felt so trapped and couldn't stand up to his father that he felt suicide was his only way out from the life his father had already decided his was going to live. It was so sad to watch because his father pretty much crushed his spirit - and he was so passionate on that stage, so very full of life and such a contrast to the way he was just moments before he killed himself.
I cried when he killed himself and the immediate aftermath (Todd's reaction to his death also tore me up rather badly), and of course at the end when the boys stood up on their desks and said "Oh Captain, my Captain." I honestly had not expected this movie to be such a tearjerker.
Oh and Robin Williams played the kind of teacher I think everyone dreams they wished they had had in school.
