September 2013 I started breaking. As I noticed, breaking is tough, tougher than I first could have imagined.
The first thing I noticed, and was constantly reminded of by our female leader, was the small amount of girls practicing breaking compared to guys. And true to that, among the beginners in my team I was the only girl. Still, I was lucky because I had two already experienced girls practicing with me, and that is already more motivation than most beginning b-girls will ever have.
You might think, is it really that horrible practicing with guys? My answer: No, it is not. I love my team, and I am glad it is made up of the people it is. The real question should be, why isn't more girls practicing?
Now, everyone who has practiced with girls probably already know the answer to this question. And it's simple. For most breaking moves you need power, and most girls do not from the beginning have the power for these moves. Of course you can gain this strength and power from practice, but the sad truth is that girls will have to practice twice as much and twice as hard as the rest. I myself has noticed this countless of times. I can say without hesitation that I sometimes practice twice as much as everyone else on my team. Still, instead of surpassing them, my improvement is slow and tedious. This is the time when the majority would give up, and to be honest I feel discouraged sometimes. But you know what? I used to be a quitter, and that time is hereby officially over.
Therefore this blog will from now on be a reminder for me to never give up. Let's enjoy the breaking community together! :)
