it actually sounded like a newsroom

I am one of the happiest advisers I think I know. Today was the turning point. Today was the day that 22 little journalism students were all busy working away. Today the room sounded like an actual newsroom for the first time in my teaching career. Today was my heaven.

As of Monday, I will have a total of 23 young journalists on my Vanguard staff. Of the 23, 13 are in my sophomore journalism class. They were absolutely amazing to watch today. The new cubs were all bug-eyed, in shock, but working hard to prove themselves. I was impressed. I heard kids talking design, stories, uping the pages for this issue, and working on interview questions (together, no less). I saw some of the returning staff members look around at the newbies and then work that much harder because they didn't want to be shown up. Today sounded like Vanguard should sound like.

I am encouraged and proud...very very proud. This phoenix will rise again.
