I mean, GOD.

One of the reasons your stories are so incredibly powerful to me is that you get so deep into your character's heads, it's like you are possessed. Scary. I mean, here you ARE Noah Mayer, dying on some emergency room operating table and being tortured almost into madness by Winston and his henchman. It's terrifying to think how close Noah came to completely snapping, and it wasn't the exhaustion, or the burning, or the beatings, or even thee drowning-it's the dark. That's what makes him almost tumble completely over the edge, that fear of going back into the darkness again.

Another outstanding, human moment in this is Noah's desperate clinging to the last human parts of his father. He and Winston have incredibly complex relationship-barely touched on by ATWT-and it's so believable to me that even though Winston has done some unforgivable things, there's a part of Noah that still-againt all reason- loves him. And maybe it isn't Winston himself, but the idea of him-the loving father that Noah will forever long for.

The shaving memory sort of undid me, as I used to love to watch my dad shave too. (He didn't use a straight razor, but he was a mug and brush man, and used to give my sister and I foam beards.) It's sad to think that this is perhaps Noah's most intimate time with his dad.

Most chilling-Jimmy and the Colonel relaxing on the boat, smoking and talking after nearly torturing Noah to death. It's a new level of sick.

Oh, BTW-Reid's a fucking ass. He needs to read the Hippocratic Oath one more time.

Anyways, I love you and your masterful storytelling brain. I will crush on you forever.

I'm glad that part makes sense to you, because on the surface it kinda doesn't. But I think a child's love for a parent is so primal, so deep, that they will love even a bad parent. And even if the parent doesn't love the child back, or hurts the child, the child will never stop longing for that love, even when they know it will never happen. I hope Noah eventually learns that he can find that fatherly love in other places. *cough!Holdencough!*

Omigosh, me too! And my dad is a kind, gentle man and a wonderful father. It was kind of trippy to take those sweet memories and turn them into something twisted.

Bonus points if you noticed their posture mirrored Winston and Noah's father/son fishing memories in Part One. Something tells me that Jimmy's not ready to give up being Winston Mayer's surrogate son. And he's not happy that the prodigal has been reinstated/supplanted him.
