Sandy and I have been designing a Larp recently, and we're both taking very different approaches to it. As we're working on a modern-day/near future premise, the standard boffer combat rules we know and love need a little updating... for GUNS!
I am bound and determined to have airsoft replicas at this game, in lieu of the wussier (but logistically easier) Nerf weaponry and variants that permeate the genre. To this end, I've been doing a lot of research about safe FPS speeds, CQB rules, and gleaning the best from various airsoft tournaments and rules systems. This has been more interesting than it might sound (an airsoft "Serenity" larp in Wisconsin with over 100 participants? Sign me up!) and I've been learning a lot in the process.
For those of you who might not know, Airsoft weapons are modern bb guns that fire hard plastic ball bearings. They range in quality from primitive, mass-produced pistols that have to have a spring cranked by hand between each shot, to fully-automatic replicas of modern firearms, built to obsessive standards by Otaku gunsmiths in Japan. Most Airsoft weapons look a LOT like their lethal counterparts, often with working "blowback" systems, scopes, laser sights, and magazines that must be switched out. They are easy to operate, have great range and accuracy, and they look sweet as hell.
I bought a replica H&K MP7 recently to experiment with. The other day I was at the warehouse, testing it out. It is awesome.
Another order is coming in the mail, including a few pistols and an assault rifle. Should be fun.
