So what with ToV taking a break for the summer and no classes, I finally found time to finish one (1) of the new GW Eldar Harlequins. To the uninitiated, these guys are... well... hmmm. Those torches are awesome, by the way, great effect.
Thank you for the very kind feedback. I do thin my paints, a LOT, which is one of the reasons it takes me so long to paint anything. I go layer by layer by very thin layer on most surfaces.
The gems are made thusly:
Wait until all other surfaces on the fig have been painted before doing the gems, if possible.
Paint the gem with watered-down Chaos Black or your preferred substitute. The paint should have the consistency of heavy cream. I then decided the highlights of the gems would all be on the top right portion of the gem. Therefore, the top right portion of each gem would be the darkest part when I had finished, being pretty close to pure black.
I used Reaper Pro-Paint Blood Red on the lower left two-thirds of the gem, heavily diluted. I applied another two or three coats to make a nice, smooth transition between the black and red. I mixed the Blood Red with a little Dragon Red in the palette and made the bottom left portion of the gem a little lighter with the new mixture. I kept applying lighter and lighter coats farther down the non-highlighted portion of the gem. At the very opposite corner I intended to put my highlight, I applied a tiny crescent of Sunburst Yellow. Then I took a tiny dab of thinned Skull White and put a dollop in the top right corner as my highlight. Once the gems dried, I hit 'em with a little thinned 'Ardcoat, to make 'em nice and shiny.
