Well, there's sure a prescedent for the White House "retiring" officers who insist on holding reality-based opinions that conflict with the administration's party line. Just ask General Shinskei, who got canned soon after he said several hundred thousand troops would be required to conduct the war properly.
General Shinseki served the entirety of his four year term as Chief of Staff of the Army. You are confusing things which occur in temporal proximity for causation.
Not really, no. Rumsfeld announced Shinseki's retirement... 14 months before it was scheduled. Thereby lame-ducking Shinseki, immediately after Shinseki's reality-based estimates of required troop strengths in Iraq. Check your chronology.
Need I point out, in addition, that Shinseki was absolutely correct? And Rumsfeld's head is still deeply inserted into his ass?
Not really, no. A name of his "successor" made its way into the press 14 months before his retirement. That was unusual. Even more unusual is that that wasn't his successor.

Interesting article here, that seems to imply it's not just a few retired boobs who think Rumsfeld has catastophically screwed the pooch.
