grad party

I just came from a graduation party thrown by/for a couple of my students from this past year. It was fun and very sweet, and good for catching up with some former students and a teacher friend I don't see much.

One of the fairly unique things about Hawaii: graduation parties are a big deal. It's unusual for one to be, say, at someone's house, with a grill and soda. It's much more likely to be as big a deal as a wedding reception. Same goes for 1st birthday parties. People rent function rooms at hotels, serve buffets, have slide shows and speechifying, etc. It's so different from what I knew of in Europe and on the mainland, but it's just normal here.

As I left I passed the room next door, where a 1st birthday party was wrapping up. The band in there was playing, "Wasting away again in Margaritaville..." At a 1st birthday party.
