over the last week or so i have been thinking a lot about a particular subject. and i want to ask everybody:
can a person truly change?
my short answer is that some things will never change about a person...their laugh, their sense of humor, and the basic way they handle things. i am and always will be stubborn. i will always be neat, i will always like it cold in the house when i go to bed and i will always be a light sleeper.
I believe that no matter how long time passes, basic character traits of a person will never change.....except if the person really wants to change him or herself. even then it takes years to actually really change that particular trait. and the person has to REALLY want to change for his or her own good.
for example. i used to over-react. i worked SUPER hard on it and now, with a little effort and quickly thinking about how serious the situation actually is, i don't blow up. it still takes me a minute to adjust, but things that used to take weeks to get over now only take me a day or two. i used to clam up in difficult situations. i don't do that at all anymore. i used to say yes all the time. i don't anymore. i used to be a wuss and avoid confrontation. it is still a little hard to do that one, no one likes talking about uncomfortable things, but i'd rather get the situation fixed asap instead of rolling around in it and uncomfortable for weeks or months.
enough said. so...no, people can't truly change unless they themselves want to change for themselves. and if you like the way you are and someone else doesn't then there is no way in hell anybody else is going to get you to listen to country music if you never liked it in the first place.
which sucks, because a lot of people who think they are fine actually aren't...i guess hopefully they will realize that they're not and change for themselves. it takes a lot of hard work and a lot of self-criticism and a lot of strength to sit there and look at yourself and say, "oh wow, i'm kind of a selfish bitch, why don't i change that?" most people blame the other person on being a poor judge of character instead of saying, "ok well, i will take your point into consideration and if i feel it's got some merit then i'll do something about it."
ah. i've been on my soapbox enough. what do you people think? can people change? and i mean qualities like egotism, selfishness, insecurity, depression, victim mentality....hard things to change..
i'm interested to hear what you have to say.
