Thanks for the reply.

Great to have a sanity check on my assumption that the recent introduction of airport utility on iPad really does mean that an iPad ought to able to set up an airport express from scratch without needing a desktop.

I was looking at file transfer options and the machine is 10.4.11 so it looks like the dropbox desktop app might run, which is rather remarkable.

The year zero thing is something i had considered as there are a few documents on there that he wants, but mostly it is bookmarks and the odd photo.

As for mail he is a gmail user so there isn't anything to transfer.

This means that it'll be a manual process moving stuff to dropbox but he really hasn't got that much to move - or at least not much stuff that can't wait until the next visit for me or my brother to double check everything has been moved correctly before dumping the old machine.

As he falls a bit into the category of this xkcd http://xkcd.com/763/ there may be a few dodgy things to come out of the woodwork though.

Oh, the airport assistant on iOS should set up the airport express just fine. (I haven't tried it, but it's what it's designed for.) The real headache is the existing personal files.

Using Gmail puts him w-a-y ahead of the game already; iOS 5.x has an option to more or less automagically configure Mail.app to work with Gmail.

My mother would resemble that XKCD cartoon if she'd ever heard of YouTube. I live in fear ...
