As he stepped in the shower he nearly trampled on a toddler he looked down shocked, but not surprised. She was playing hide and seek, it wasn’t her fault everyone else didn’t realize they were playing. He scooped her up depositing her onto the floor and watching her wobble toward the kitchen. Most days he loved how you could see the bathroom from the kitchen like a secret window. It allowed him precious moments to gaze on intimidate routines filled strong emotions and little irrational thoughts she often hid. Moments she kept guarded even now. Today though all he could see standing on the cool white porcelain was her teary eyes arms full of chubby infant as she shouted at him. It made his chest tight because they always bickered but they rarely fought. He closed his eyes letting the warm water wash off him, thick hazy steam filled the room as he closed his eyes and just remembered.

*~*~*~*~

It started as most events in their time together had started, with a dead body and an argument. The weather wasn’t cold, just crisp the orange and red hues of the leaves around the yard seemed such a contradiction to the violence inside. They stood in the small home of the victim they’d later learn was Sarah Winters, 22 of Middleburg Virginia. She was raped and then brutally stabbed, hydrochloric acid dumped onto her still breathing body while her infant daughter lay in the crib 5 feet away, it turned his stomach.

But the case had just started they hadn’t known any of this, it seemed business as usual Bones stood over the body spewing the facts, as she could see them. It was normal; safe. No talk about sperm donations, brain tumors, or amnesia, not that they had talked about that since it happened it had been months. Booth found comfort in the fimilarity that hadn’t been present with this distance and seemingly endless pregnant pauses lately (no pun intended).

That’s why he was knocked off balance when she declared the infant evidence, and refused to let social services have her. It was slightly irrational and he could see it in her eyes but he was positive that if he pointed it out he would get punched; her jaw just had that slight shift, her eyes daring him to challenge her. He tried to argue and her returning tone was harsh and  then she spoke his name “Booth” in that tone that that spoke to the volumes of how important this was, he couldn’t deny her, he’d never bendable too deny her anything not when she looked at him like that, and it was that choice that sent his world tilting in a whole new direction.

*~*~*~

The realization that his life was completely hers came to him like most things did, he was sitting on his couch thinking about her while he should be out trying to have a semblance of a social life. As he took a sip of his beer, the hockey game on mute he realized that he hadn’t even hesitated. They had come together at the end of the case, she hadn’t asked him- she’d told him she was applying for custody of Carrie-Lynn Winters, she asked not for his help because in her eyes she could do anything including raise this child on her own, she asked for a letter of references and he didn’t even hesitate to agree.

Except it took him three days to write the letter because every draft looked more and more like a confession of his undying love. She finally cornered him in his office accusing him not really wanting to help her, her hair pulled back in a tight clip, he remembered, the blouse she was wearing the soft tan one with the little flowers, and scooped neck. He shouted back at her and thrusting all three drafts into her hands before he really thought about it. She read them over carefully and he felt like his heart was banging so loudly in his chest she was sure to be able to hear it, but when she was finished she just looked up at him with that tilt of her eyes and those eyes and stated “Thank You”

The world had tilted again, she began waiting for him to drive her home, they ate dinners together, he would offer to read to Carrie, he liked being part of these little domestic moments

The first time she kissed him he almost stopped breathing but she barely noticed. They stood in her kitchen he was washing she was drying, Carrie behind them throwing more food on the floor then into her mouth as they chatted, laughing and she just leaned over and kissed him it was soft and familiar like they’d been doing this from the very beginning. And then she just picked up the next plate and began to dry. He watched her for a few more second before resuming his dish washing, because the moment just seemed so them.

Lines just blurred but no one noticed, or if they did maybe they just had grown wise enough not to poke at it, he often found himself holding his breath sure he was going to wake up.

Their first time was much like the kiss, they sat on her couch watching a black and white movie when she stood up he looked at her with slight puzzlement but she just tugged his hand and pulled him down the hallway knowing he’d always follow her.

He supposed to her, there didn’t need to be words and long discussions about risk versus benefits, she was a scientist she had done those calculations and they were doing nothing more then evolving, everything evolved, if this wasn’t true she wouldn’t have any dead cultures to study.

He could spend years just remembering all their moments, each one like points on a time line marking out their lives. He didn’t think that he could forget any of them because she had this way of making the simplest thing unforgettable etching them into his mind.

She had a way of knocking his world off balance from the very moment she stepped into it. So as he stood at the counter trying to figure out how to work with tofu, because he’d taken bullets for her, cooking the soy product should be nothing, he was again unprepared for her to hand him the stick with the two lines. The blood rushed through his brain, he could barely hear her as she told him scientifically both condoms and other contraceptives are only 99% effect. He knew though behind her rational explanations, she had this look in her eyes,  those Cerulean eyes which had always told him so much, he could see all the irrationals fears, so he pressed his mouth to hers lifting her onto the counter tofu forgotten as he did what he always did- guided her through the strong emotions she often found difficult to articulate.

The water had long grown freezing as he shut the shower off stepping onto the cool porcelain tiles with their intricate mosaic patterns. He found her in still the kitchen watching the blue skies her jaw set in firm line he wrapped his arms around her tense frame, conceding, she thrown his world off balance because she was his world and they had always been destined to evolve to this place. He told her so causing a smile to ghost her lips because he knew that he too had knocked her world off balance from the very beginning.
