Summary: Gilbert is on the road and misses Anne.
Author's Notes: Modern era. Characters belong to L.M. Montgomery, except Patricia.
And Gilbert was awake. He didn't know what had awoken him, but he was awake. Gilbert glanced out the window: it was still dark. He sighed, knowing he wouldn't be able to fall back asleep, so he got up and walked to the bathroom where he splashed some cold water on his face. Not knowing where else to go, but not wanting to be alone either, Gilbert headed to the lobby of the hotel. At the desk, he saw a woman in a her mid-twenties.
"Good morning sir. What awakes you at this time?"
"I can't sleep."
"Any particular reason?"
"I miss my fiancee."
"You're engaged? Congratulations!"
"Thank you."
"Would it help if you told me about her?"
"Sure," Gilbert replied, smiling.
"What's her name?"
"Anne Shirley."
"That's a nice name."
"I think so too. She didn't like it when she was younger. She wanted to change her name to Cordelia."
The young lady laughed politely.
"She's a handful and I love her dearly."
"What else do you want to tell me about her?"
"Are you the kind to read romance novels?"
"Novels, not so much per se, but I love a good love story. Do you have one?"
"Oh yes," Gilbert laughed. "I first met her when she was eleven. She was an orphan, and this older 'couple'. . .uhm, they're brother and sister, adopted her. She was. . .different. On her first day of school she punched me in the nose and broke it because I called her 'carrots'; she has red hair. She wouldn't be friend for the longest time. And then, we had the star-crossed lovers drama of whenever I wanted to be with her, she had a boyfriend and claimed she didn't love me. When she finally realized she loved me, I became prideful and wouldn't have her. But my dad told me not to throw away my heart like that. You see, he had been engaged to Marilla, the woman who adopted Anne, but they had a fight and they broke it off. He never forgave himself. And in the end, I did wind up with the girl."
"Aww, that's so sweet."
"So what about you. . .Patricia?"
"I'm single. Still looking for the right guy."
"You'll find him."
"Thank you. Oh by the way, the sun is about to rise, if you want to go look at it. I don't know if that's your thing, but it's really beautiful in these parts."
"Would you like to come with me?"
"I can't; I need to stay here. But go ahead."
Gilbert walked out and stood in the parking lot to watch the rising sun. The oranges and reds made him miss Anne even more.
