“Scotty?” Kevin called, walking into the apartment.
When he didn’t receive a response, Kevin assumed Scotty was out celebrating the grand opening with some friends. He went to bed after a quick shower.
Kevin awoke the next morning to an empty bed.
“Scotty?” Kevin called sleepily.
He got up and wandered around the small living area, and the restaurant area. When he couldn’t find Scotty, he called Kitty.
“Hello?” she answered.
“I’ve lost Scotty.”
“You guys broke up? What happened?”
“No, I mean literally. I can’t find him.”
“Have you tried Sarah? You know how close they are. Or does he still keep in contact with friends? Have you tried them?”
“Good thinking. I’ll call Sarah, you call Mom.”
Kevin dialed Sarah’s home number.
“Hello?” answered a French male voice.
“Luc, is Scotty there?”
“Let me get your sister.”
“Kevin, right now’s not a good time.”
“Sarah, if you have my husband there, I have the right to know.”
“He’s okay. He just doesn’t want to talk to you.”
“Why? Let me talk to him Sarah.”
“He’s upset you missed the opening. And. . .he says you can be. . .suffocating.”
“What the hell? Fine. Tell him he can come home and I’ll go to Kitty’s. That way he can have all the air he wants.”
Kevin called Kitty again.
“Kit, can I crash at your place? Scotty says I’m suffocating him.”
“Of course. Come on over.”
Kevin watched as Kitty fed Evan, feeling a pang of jealousy that he didn’t have his own kid.
“Where were you really when Scotty had his opening?”
“A meeting.”
“No Kevin. I said really. I know there was no meeting.”
“Oh really? And how would you know that?”
“You would’ve mentioned it sooner.”
“Fine, I went to a bar. I know that makes me a horrible husband.”
“You have to tell him.”
“Why?”
“Because you made vows to him. Kevin we all think you two have the perfect marriage, even if you both are far from perfect yourselves. Kev, you can’t push him away. He means the world to you, right?”
“Yes. Of course.”
“Then for God’s sake, let him know, and stop acting like you want to ruin your marriage. I know you see losing Robert as losing your best friend and employer, but Kevin, you still have your husband. Don’t underestimate how important that is. Especially after how hard you fought for him.”
Kitty poured two glasses of wine and handed one to Kevin. Kevin took a sip before placing it down.
“I need to go talk with Scotty.”
Kevin found Scotty in the kitchen of the restaurant. Kevin Stood wordlessly in the doorway until Scotty turned around.
“Hi,” Scotty said.
“How is your breathing doing?”
“I’m fine. Look, I’m sorry-“
Scotty stopped when Kevin help up his hand.
“No, you’re right.”
“It’s just, it seems like so much of our marriage is about you. And I love it, because it makes me feel needed. I didn’t get that growing up. But, I have needs too. I need you.”
“I’m sorry. You’re right. I’ve let this Robert thing get the best of me. It’s not fair to you. I love you Scotty, and I love being married to you. I know I should show it more. I know I can be cold and demanding. I’m sorry.”
“You’re also sweet and carrying and loyal. Always loyal.”
“Still, I promise to improve. It will take time, but I really do want to improve. I thought I had lost you that morning, and I don’t want to lose you for real.”
Kevin didn’t realize he had moved, but he found himself face-to-face with Scotty.
“I’ll be patient,” Scotty said.
“Okay. I have a confession for you.”
“You didn’t have a meeting.”
“How did you know?”
“I know you Kev.”
“I’m sorry Scotty. I was jealous. But I will definitely work on celebrating your success when I’m in a slump. I promise, I really am proud of you and I wish I could take back my response and be there for you. That was what you needed, and I can’t believe I failed you for my own selfishness.”
“Please believe me that I do love you. That I will always love you. And I’m sorry I acted like a child just up and leaving like that. I guess I wanted to make you worry. That was petty of me.”
“Maybe, but it does reassure me that you aren’t perfect.”
“Of course I’m not. Did you think I was?”
“You’re such an angel, that sometimes it’s easy to believe you are.”
“I’m not. I promise I’m not.”
“Are we all good then?”
“I think so. It depends on one thing.”
“What’s that?”
“Are you going to kiss me?”
Kevin grinned before doing so.
“I really do love you Kevin.”
“I love you too.”
Kevin leaned in to kiss Scotty again. They broke apart to the sound of applause. The Walker clan stood in the doorway.
“Thank you Scotty. I really didn’t want Kevin crashing with me unconditionally,” Kitty said.
“Gee, thanks Kit,” Kevin said.
“I’d rather have you stay with me anyway,” Scotty whispered in Kevin’s ear. “She might try turning you into a Republican.”
And for the first time since the crash, Kevin laughed.
