Summary: Hermione is puzzled by what she's found in her briefcase.
Written with love for May for all her support over the years. Thank you, dear, for reminding me that this was the 20th anniversary of the trio's first journey to Hogwarts.
At first, Hermione suspected Rose. After all, she often found gifts from her daughter in her briefcase, usually small toys and drawings. So finding a couple of Chocolate Frogs stuffed in among her scrolls of parchment didn't seem too unusual.
As the day progressed, Hermione noticed something strange was going on. First, she found a sugar quill in the place of her favorite eagle feather quill (luckily, she had a couple of spare quills in her bag). But when she found Fizzing Whizbees in her desk drawer, Bertie Bott's Every Flavor Beans in the pocket of her cloak, and Drooble's Best Blowing Gum in the teapot she kept in her desk, she grew more puzzled. As the daughter of two dentists, she really didn't eat that many sweets. That was really more Ron's… Hermione shook her head. Ron had to be the one behind all this. She couldn't figure out why, though, and wondering about it left her distracted all day.
All was quiet that evening when Hermione stepped out of the fireplace into her sitting room. She knew Ron was already home as his cloak had been flung haphazardly over the back of the sofa. Rose and Hugo were usually the first to greet her when she came home, but today they were nowhere to be found. As she started toward the study to put her bag away, Ron came into the room.
"Hello, love."
Hermione looked around. "Where are Rose and Hugo?"
"Staying with my mum and dad," he said, taking her cloak from her shoulders and tossing it on top of his.
She frowned. "What's going on?"
"You and I are going away for a few days," he said, wrapping his arms around her.
"But it's only Thursday. We both have to work tomorrow," Hermione said, turning to look at him. She really didn't like not knowing what was going on.
"Not anymore," he said cheerfully. "I've cleared it with your supervisor. I've had this mini-break planned for a while."
"Without speaking to me first?" Hermione asked.
Ron smiled widely. "It was a surprise."
Hermione furrowed her brow. It still didn't make sense. Her birthday wasn't for another two weeks or so. "But why now?"
"It's September first," Ron said.
"Yes, and…?"
"And… it's our anniversary," he said, smiling. "We met twenty years ago today."
Hermione opened her mouth to speak, then closed it again. Ron didn't usually remember these things. She nearly always had to remind him about important events. "How did you…?"
"About a month ago Harry was talking about Teddy going back to school, and we worked out that this year would be twenty years since we first went to Hogwarts," Ron said. "So I came up with this idea."
Ron looked at her uncertainly for a moment. Then Hermione rushed at him, throwing her arms around him and kissing him soundly. Surprised, he laughed before kissing her back with equal fervor.
"Why the sweets?" Hermione asked, pulling back, her arms still locked around his neck
"It was a clue," Ron said. "You know…for the trolley on the Hogwarts Express."
Hermione shook her head, laughing. "You're mad."
"A bit," he said. He leaned in for another kiss, but then stopped. "You wouldn't happen to have any of those Chocolate Frogs left, would you?"
