It would have been easy to blame it on the booze. He had knocked back more than his share of Firewhisky the night before at the party. Ron knew there was no way Hermione would accept that as an excuse, though.

Carefully, he folded his blanket and placed it beside him on the settee. He stood and made his way through the quiet house. His head was pounding, and his stomach was churning, but he wasn’t quite sure he could blame that on the booze either.

He found Hermione in her study, curled up in her armchair with a book. She didn’t look up when he came in.

“Hermione.”

She ignored him.

“Hermione, I’m sorry.”

“You should be,” she hissed, looking up from her book. Her eyes were very red and he knew she’d been crying. He wanted to curl up and die.

“I was jealous,” he said, deciding the truth was best.

“I figured as much. I just don’t understand why you would have done that in front of my co-workers.”

“You spend all your time with him. Lunches, late nights, Floo calls. How am I supposed to feel? I’m your husband.”

“And I’m your wife. You’re supposed to trust me,” Hermione said. “This bit of legislation is very important to me. I don’t want to spend all night at work. I don’t want to spend weekends there, but I don’t have a lot of choice right now. And Randall… he’s just a co-worker. Nothing more.”

He sighed and knelt beside her chair. “If it makes you feel any better, I’ve never felt quite this stupid before.”

“You should feel stupid,” she said. “You made an arse of yourself.”

“I am really sorry,” he said. “I didn’t mean to embarrass you.”

She closed her book, and ran her fingers through his hair. “I forgive you. But in the future, talk to me before getting into brawls with my coworkers, okay?”
