An unexpected visit

Nov 14, 2005 14:42

Who: Anyone at the lab
Where: Reception area
When: Now

Catherine was busy working, trying to find a pattern to all the blood spatter in the pictures spread out in front of her. It was proving to be a little pointless though. She stuffed her hands into the pockets of her lab coat, taking a step back from the table. There was a connection point somewhere between A and B; she just couldn't find it.

She suddenly snapped out of her reverie when she heard her name being paged over the intercom.

Catherine Willows to reception please; Catherine to reception.

She sighed a little and took off her glasses, slipping them into her pocket. Making her way to the waiting area, she froze as she heard the voice before seeing the person. A voice that she hadn't expected to hear, save for over the phone every now and then. A voice that made her want to fly to a crime lab in a third world country. Not that they even had crime labs in third world countries, but the point was - if they built it, she would go. Taking a deep breath, Catherine squared her shoulders and walked to where her visitor was sitting.

"Mom?"

Catherine's mother turned her head and looked at her daughter, standing up. "Well don't say it like that. Yes, I'm your mother to answer the question in your voice."

Cath groaned inwardly, already wishing the floor would open up and swallow her. Or at the very least, to get a page. "What are you doing here? That was the question in my voice."

"I can't get you over the phone, or e-mail. Nancy said she hadn't spoken with you lately, so-"

"So you decided to pack your bags and fly down here to Miami check on me?"

"Well, I need the sun."

"No, you're being nosy." Catherine looked around and ushered her mother to a corner where they could talk. "You can't just come to my work like this. With the new security, how did you even get in?"

Cath's mother scoffed. "Where do you think you got your charming personality from? Certainly not Sam. You'd think you would be glad to see your mother."

"God, mom..." Catherine rubbed her head, feeling a headache coming on. "Look, I'm glad to see you, but I have to work. You know, you're at my job. And if you can get past security, then there are some holes we need to fix." Cath suddenly realized that her mother would be needing a place to stay. Oh shit. Not with me. Please, God. Not with me. "So, mom...uh...which hotel are you staying at?"

"Catherine if you don't want me to stay with you, just say it."

Oh fucking hell. "Mom, I didn't say that, I was just..." With a sigh, Catherine forced herself not to roll her eyes. "Of course you can stay with me."

"Will your boyfriend be there?"

"Oh sure, yeah. You know, whatever." Catherine was being sarcastic now, and knew it. But she couldn't help it when her mother rolled in to town. "You're going to have to go back to my place now. I won't be home for another six or seven hours, anyway."

"You work too hard, you know that?"

Catherine wanted to punch something. Hard. "Yeah, mom, I know. Now, could you please? Before my supervisor comes out, or someone else..."
