Quick update

All the best intentions, yet the month is almost over and I've hardly written a word.

The kids had winter vacation this week. We spent two nights at Point Reyes National Seashore. Even though it's one of my favorite places on earth, I hadn't been there in years and years -I have a vague memory of taking my son to the visitor's center when he was a toddler, but I'm not even sure if that actually happened or if I just thought about it. I can't believe we let it go that long. But the good news is that the kids loved it too, so I've promised myself we'll be back in less than nine years.

We were big slugs for most of the rest of vacation. I barely got the laundry done and never did catch up with the shopping. But this weekend, I went to Stitches West! It was beyond fabulous. I spent hours on the market floor, spent way too much money, and even got to attend a class. The classes sell out REALLY fast, so I have to remember to sign up earlier next year. My major purchase: Enough Brooks Farm Riata in a beautiful shade of deep sea-green (a show special color not shown on the Web site) to make the afghan shown on the cover of Knitting Nature by Norah Gaughan. I started swatching this evening... mmmm. Also volunteered for a couple of hours at the afghans for Afghans booth. It was way fun to meet other volunteers, as well as the delightful if slightly control-freakish director, and to do something semi-useful for a bit.

There's so much media I want to talk about that I don't even know where to start, and I need to go to bed. But I do have to mention that my spouse and I went to see Music and Lyrics last night, and it was really fun. The first forty minutes or so were actually hilarious. After that it settled down into a more generic romantic comedy, but it never stopped being charming and enjoyable. As President Lincoln is reputed to have said, those who like that kind of thing will find that they like it. I have some slightly deeper thoughts on why romantic comedies are like mashed potatoes, but they'll have to wait for tomorrow.

One of our kittens has been missing since yesterday morning. I have a bad feeling that she's gone, and I'm not as upset as I ought to be. Honestly, two cats are a lot easier to deal with than three. But if you live in the Bay Area and you see a small white calico with black and apricot blotches, please let me know--her sister misses her.
