My babies have grown up :(

I had a bit of a cry last night. When did my little ones grow up? I know Beth is still little, and in the grand scheme of things so is Harry, but it just hit me yesterday that they are each moving on in their own ways.

Today was Harry's first official day in top class (R, Y1, and Y2). I asked his teacher this morning and there are 9 in his year, and 1 in each of the others (but the year 2 one is leaving at Christmas). When we went to pick him up from playscheme yesterday evening the teacher had put out their workbooks on the desks all ready for this morning. For some reason that made it seem more real. This morning when we dropped him off she showed him where to put his things. There were some children already there and two of them were using the computers. Up till now he has gone to the computer room for this, but in top class they have 4 computers actually in the classroom so they can be used throughout the day. There is just something about the room that seems very grown up. The have their own seat around the tables and the tables are used for working rather than for playing (though obviously there is some element of play - but in class 4 it was just a case of the children go to which ever table has the thing they want to do on it).

I realise that this may sound very grown up for reception class, but this is just the way they do things. I also think it suits Harry very well. He's not good at free play and his last teacher often commented that if you gave him a structured learning activity (be it a worksheet, things for counting and sorting, etc) then he was much happier. So for him this may be a better environment than the traditional reception class.

And why does it feel like Beth has grown up? I don't know. When I went to pick her up from nursery yesterday she pulled herself up on me and clapped at the fact that she was standing there. D went and got her Fifi bag from her peg and she saw it and was pointing to it and saying something. We don't know what she was saying but she suddenly sounded more grown up: like she was saying something particular about the bag or something. It is hard to describe. I mentioned it to D last night, about how she suddenly seemed more grown up and he didn't really know what I meant, so maybe it was just me.

I can't wait to go and get Harry this evening to see how he got on.
