Tomorrow Harry starts proper school. He is going into Reception class (though they differ from the state system and call it Class 5 - which is they age they will turn during the year). It feels a bit weird. I thought it would feel like a bigger deal, but it doesn't. I think that is because he isn't starting at a new school. He is staying where he is and the only difference is that when we drop him off we will go into the classroom on the right rather than the classroom on the left! Same uniform and everything. His class will be a bit smaller (last year there were 16, this year there are 11). The main difference is that he is going all day 5 days a week (up until the summer he was 3 mornings and 2 full days) and he will be there till 5 or 6pm (depending on what time either I get back home or D finishes work). He is looking forward to doing the French club that his teacher organises one day after school. There are a couple of other clubs but I don't know what they will be yet.
The other big event tomorrow is that Beth starts nursery. And of course she has no idea that her whole life is going to change! She will be going 3 days a week, and spending 1 day a week with each set of grandparents (as they did with Harry). She is all set with a lovely Fifi (and the flowertots) backpack for her things (which at this stage consists of a change of clothes!). We realised yesterday that we hadn't bought a pack of nappies to take in, so D did that today. It seems so strange. I've been at home with her for so much longer than with Harry. When he was this age I was considering giving up work to be with him. As a result (and because I'm still breastfeeding her) she seems so much more dependent on me. I will miss her as I'm so used to being with her.
As for me, tomorrow kind of marks the start of my PGCE course. I will be spending everyday of the next two weeks in the library studying. Either finishing off my OU course and revising, or my pre-course tasks and reading. On Wednesday this week I'm going down to Oxford for the day to use the library in the department as I can't get hold of a couple of the books I need. And I will spend one day shopping and having a girlie day (including the cinema) with
theatremad. Then on 8th Sept I beginning doing my pre-course observation in some local schools here, and on 15th Sept I'm down to Oxford for my first day there.
It's all change.
