Ski-Bunny Weekend in Colorado

Dec 11, 2007 13:04

Wow, what an awesome, super, spectacular, stunningly beautiful weekend! :)
I flew up to Denver on Friday night and my friend, W, picked me up and after retrieving my rental equiptment nearby we went back to his place where I got to see G, his 15 year old son, again.

G has the whooping cough at the moment - which he caught from his sister at Thanksgiving. By the time we knew though t'was too late to change my ticket and though likely still contagious he had started antibiotics and was feeling better by the time I left. I kept my distance and consumed multiple packets of Emergen-C. :) I will NOT be having any issues with Lady Cold or Sir Whooping Cough.

Saturday morning we were out the door by about 6 and off into the mountains west of Denver, winding our way up to Copper Mountain. Mother nature blessed my trip by slamming CO with snow the day before I arrived and the # of trails opened tripled the day before we went! YAY! It wasn't a dreary day, but it was cloudy with flurries all day. We made it an early day and were home by 3 (tis about a 2 hour drive each way) so that we'd have some energy left for Sunday and as a precaution since W is getting over a reasonably serious knee injury.

Sunday morning we were out the door by about the same time but this time when the sun started rising behind us, it seemed like we were about to have a stunning blue-skied day of mountain fun.

This time we did about 1/2 of the same trip that we had the day before but then turned and headed north over a snowy mountain pass on our way to Winter Park/Mary Jane.

I don't know if it was the blue sky, the positively stunning views, or just something about this resort itself, but I really liked Winter Park better than Copper. Even though W & I ended up missing one another early on when we planned to meet at a certain lift at the bottom and instead, as it turned out, both wound up at a different lift *grin*. Ah well, it was fun. While the very, very top of the mountain wasn't open yet (pictures to come) we went up as far as we could and I had a view of the bowls at the top - all of which are considered intermediate or advanced. I can't wait to get the pictures developed. See, I got a disposable camera to take with me while actually skiing so now I have to wait to get those developed to get views from the actual mountains themselves, though I didn't take many. But man, I can't tell you how breathtaking it all was in person. WOW. The pictures in this post were all taken (some very obviously) from inside the car on the drive to/from.

Mountains back east are NOTHING like these. The first trail we went down had to be longer (and it was 1/2 the mountain or less) than any trail I'd ever gone on back in NH or ME. At least it sure feels like they're mammoth in comparison.

I'm relatively a chicken when skiing and I'm totally okay with that - I really don't want to break a bone at the moment(or ever), t'would serious curtail the massage biz, ya know? :) And through good fortune, or perhaps just my ability to admit defeat, I got a mini lesson from a misc. woman at Copper when I asked if she knew how I could make my ankles and calves hurt any less. Her 3 minute lesson got me through the weekend AND gave me something important to work on that I never knew to do based on the few beginner lessons I took about 15 years ago. Wherever you are, wonderful lady, I am so unbelievably grateful for your help! :)

Now I must acquire more clients so I can make another trip back!
