In the confusion of finding out Yanagi Renji had left, Inui Sadaharu made a promise to himself. “I’ll wait forever for you.”

Four years later, they were together, but separated by a net. It was a heated match, yet frosty reunion.

After the match, the frost started thawing. At least, that’s what Inui thought, and was brave enough to crack a joke.

Three days later, Renji called Inui.

“I was just calling to … say hi, I suppose,” Renji greeted him.

Inui smiled to himself and pushed his glasses up his nose. “That doesn’t seem like you, but I’m glad to hear from you,” Inui said.

“I’m glad to hear that,” Renji responded, relaxing on to his bed. “May I ask something about our last day together?” He broached the subject cautiously. There was no sense opening old wounds if he didn’t have to.

“Of course,” Inui answerd, steeling himself for the worst.

“Did you really mean for us to stay together forever, or was that just a dream a little kid had?”

Inui paused before answering that question. “A little of both. I really wanted to conquer the world with our tennis,” he said. “I think we still could. And this is no longer the dream of a little kid. This is something I think that if we work on, we could still do it.”

“You’re such a dreamer, Sadaharu,” Renji smiled to himself though. “Do you really want to do this?”

“I really want to conquer the world with our tennis.”

Renji frowned a little. “With us living so far apart, it’s going to be difficult to train together, that, and our schools now have such a rivalry, it would just look bad.”

Inui snorted. “We can work around that,” he said.

Renji’s first day of high school was interesting, especially come lunch time. Renji had taken a seat outside and was eating his bento quietly when Sanada Genichirou came and sat down next to him.

“You’ll never believe who is in my class,” Sanada stated, opening up his lunch box.

“I’m not sure I like the sound of that,” Renji said, chewing his food deliberately slow. “I’ve heard rumors though.” He commented.

“They’re true,” Sanada said (try something other than “said”?), tearing into his lunch. “That old friend of yours that was at Seigaku last year is here.”

Renji paused, almost choking on his current mouthful, but had the dignity to not do so.

“Speak of the devil, and he shall appear,” Renji quoted in English, half expecting Inui to appear since he and Sanada were talking about him.

“He’s eating in our classroom,” Sanada said. “I offered to have him join us, but he just gave me a creepy look.”

Renji chuckled. “That sounds like Sadaharu alright.” Renji paused to take another bite of his lunch. “I assume he’ll be joining the tennis team. I’m just not sure he would be able to make it on to the regulars.”

“If he plays half as well as he did last year, I think there’s a good chance he will,” Sanada said, almost feeling jealous. For the last three years, if he played doubles, it was always Renji he was partnered with. With Inui in the picture, Sanada either wouldn’t be playing, or would be playing exclusively singles.

Renji caught a glimpse of his friend’s face. “Jealous, Genichirou? You know the coach likes rotating people’s partners. Even when it’s obvious who should be playing together.”

“I think we have some sempai that will argue that out first. Just because we were the best in junior high doesn’t mean they haven’t improved.”

Renji just shook his head. “We’ll see come this afternoon,” he said as he put the lid back on his lunch box. “I have an old friend to say hi to.”

The lights in Rikkai University’s high school division’s building flickered as Renji wandered through the halls, looking for classroom 1-C.

‘Someone should look into that electrical short…’ Renji thought as he passed through the door to the classroom. Renji took a chair from the desk in front of Inui, and turned it around so he was facing him. “So the rumor was true.”

“I take it the rumor was of my presence here,” Inui stated, looking up from his own finished lunch.

“Of course. So why are you here?” Renji asked, not about to hedge about the question.

“Isn’t it obvious? I’m going to school.” Inui said, adjusting his glasses before getting up to throw some trash away.

Renji sighed. “You know what I meant, Sadaharu.”

“And I meant what I said.” Inui said, sitting back down. “I’m sure I don’t need to tell you all the advantages Rikkai has.”

“Of course not,” Renji said. “I assume you’ll be joining the tennis team?”

“Of course,” Inui grinned. “Perhaps I can play doubles with you again, Kyouju.”

“You know you’re not suited for doubles, Sadaharu.” Renji pointed out. Renji, on the other hand, much preferred to play doubles.

“We’ll see,” Inui said.

Tennis practice that day didn’t go well. Renji’s accuracy had dropped, and a lot of his balls went wild, or even into the adjacent courts.

“Yanagi! Get off the court if you can’t keep your control up!” The high school’s coach yelled at him.

“Sorry, Tsuda-sensei.” Renji said, walking off the courts, and heading into the club room.

“You were looking for me, weren’t you?” Inui asked, already half undressed for a shower.

“I was not,” Renji said, turning his head into his locker.

“Something was throwing off your game,” Inui said. “The only logical thing would be that you were expecting to watch me. I unfortunately twisted my ankle, and was sent to shower and go on home once it had a chance to settle.”

Renji breathed a small sigh. “Sadaharu, how are you going to play if you injure yourself?”

“I can wait it out,” Inui said, finishing undressing.

Renji shook his head as he removed his clothing for his own shower. “Are you still living at home, or do you have a place close by here?”

“I’m in a small apartment my parents are paying for nearby,” Inui answered from his shower stall. Renji took up the one next to him.

“Shall I walk you home? I’d hate to see you get any more injuries.” Renji offered, wondering why the offer made him want to blush.

“I’d appreciate that,” Inui said.

After the two had gotten dressed, they headed for Inui’s small apartment.

“How’s the ankle doing?” Renji asked while they climbed up the stairs.

“It’s much better. I should be able to participate fully in practice tomorrow,” Inui said as he opened up the door. “Would you like to come in?”

Renji nodded slightly in answer and followed Inui into the small apartment. “You weren’t kidding when you said it was small.” The kitchen and living room were part of the same room, with a small bedroom and bathroom just off to the side.

“It’s affordable,” Inui said, setting his school and tennis bags down on the floor and taking his shoes off. Renji did the same, and took a seat.

“You never did answer my question,” Renji said. Inui tilted his head to show he didn’t quite understand what the question was. “About why you’re at Rikkai. You aren’t still holding onto a silly dream.”

Inui sighed a little. “Perhaps I am. You never did answer me. And honestly, if I have to, I can wait forever. I really meant what I said that day.”

“Sadaharu, don’t you think it’s best if - “ Renji was cut off by a sudden kiss. Half-lidded eyes slid completely closed as he awkwardly attempted to kiss back.

“I’ve been waiting for years to do that,” Inui said, leaning back, blushing a very bright red.

“I didn’t know you felt that way,” Renji replied, shocked.

“The day you left, I promised I’d wait forever for you. And now that I’m in a position where I can…I want to be with you,” Inui began. “Not just tennis - I…really like you.”

Renji sighed a little. He had wondered if Inui had possibly had feelings for him. “Sadaharu, you are such a dreamer, but I must admit, I was afraid I actually reciprocated those feelings. I was glad my family had to move - I didn’t have to deal with it. Now…” Renji shifted his position on the couch, and pulled Inui down into another kiss. “I think that speaks volumes about how I feel now.”

Inui was rather breathless after that kiss. “Renji…I think you know why I’m here.” Renji nodded, all his answers coming together clearly now.

“Still want to take over the world with tennis?” Renji asked, relaxing unlike he’d been able to do in years. Inui grinned.

“Of course. We could still be the best doubles team there ever was.”

“We’re out of practice, but I’m sure it will come back easily to us.” Renji said, smiling.

“Of course it will. And we will be the best.” Inui said, kissing Renji again, sliding his hands underneath Renji’s shirt, feeling the muscles hidden by the fabric.

Renji’s breath caught, and his hands ran along Inui’s back. “Sadaharu…we…” should stop was what he wanted to say, but he groaned in protest, his body wanting more of this

Inui murmured into Renji’s ear. “There’s a 97% chance you’re liking this.” Renji’s response was a moan and an arching upwards. Inui’s hand left Renji’s chest to rest on top of his groin. Inui rubbed at the now tight spot. Renji tried to push Inui away, but it was half-hearted; he wanted this.

Inui leaned over Renji, and easily pulled Renji up and rolled him over on to his stomach. “What are you doing, Sadaharu?” Renji asked, confused. His answer was a couple of sharp slaps to his buttocks.

“That,” Inui said. “That’s for enjoying this.” Renji shivered a little. “And partially for leaving me all those years ago.” Renji had to chuckle at that, despite the stinging.

“Of course,” Renji said, sitting carefully back up, kissing Inui. Inui smirked a little.

“I’ve been wanting to do that,” Inui grinned.

“I suppose you have,” Renji agreed quietly. “Now, are you going to do something about…this.” Renji nodded towards his crotch.

Inui just kept the smirk on his face as his slid his hand down Renji’s pants. “Something like this?” Inui breathed against Renji’s neck. Renji gasped, thinking that was exactly what he had in mind, though he was surprised that Inui was willing to go this far this fast.

Renji whimpered as Inui’s hand moved along his cock, his face brighter than a tomato. “Sadaharu…what…?”

“I’ve been wanting to get my hands on you for a long time, Renji.” Inui said, kissing Renji again as Inui’s hand tightened ever so slightly around Renji’s cock.

Renji moaned even as in the back of his mind why Inui just didn’t remove his pants. There wasn’t really any reason to wonder any more as it was too late to worry about it. He had already come.

Renji lay breathless on Inui’s couch, ignoring the sticky mess for the moment. He hadn’t thought being touched like that could be so amazing. “Sadaharu…” Renji finally breathed out.

“You don’t have to reciprocate, you know.” Inui stated, pushing his glasses back to their proper position on his face. Renji’s hands wrapped around Inui’s waist.

“And if I want to?” Renji asked, his voice slightly more huskier than usual, one hand finding its way to Inui’s crotch, rubbing him in much the same Inui had done to himself.

Inui breathed slowly and calmly, not wanting to seem too eager. “I won’t complain.” Inui arched into Renji’s hand, wanting it almost as much as Renji had. Renji thoughtfully tugged Inui’s pants off, his hand going slowly, not wanting this to end so quickly - or as messy - as it had for him.

Renji tried different angles, different ways of tugging at Inui’s cock in order to maximize the pleasure. Renji grinned as Inui spilled himself into Renji’s hand, moaning out Renji’s name.

The two teens lay together on the floor once they had cleaned themselves up and changed clothes - Renji in borrowed pair of shorts and Inui in his old Seigaku warm ups. Inui curled up against Renji’s chest, and Renji wrapped his arms around him. Perhaps this could work out after all.

“Partners forever from now on, Sadaharu,” Renji promised sleepily, squeezing Inui’s hand.. Inui smiled his first genuine smile in almost five years. Forever might not be 100% certain, but it was enough for Inui that Renji wanted it as well.
