He knows instinctively what Dean needs; has since he was assigned to him. So it’s no hardship to offer him this comfort when he can’t express how much he craves it. He’s still not sure how it works, the whole close contact thing among humans. It’s so much easier amongst the other angels. Because they aren’t corporeal they radiate energy. It’s the energy that tells other angels how close they can come. From the first time he’d seen Dean Castiel had felt an energy around him that absolutely cried out for peace/comfort/help. It was to be expected in hell. But even when he was ‘back’ amongst his own kind he still radiated need. Through his human eyes Castiel could see it as a deep blue. Castiel also knows that Dean will never ask for the comfort he needs. It would be too much like admitting weakness, and that’s just not something Dean is willing to do; so Castiel gives it the only way he can. When Sam goes off with the one who would be Jezebel, Castiel is there for His Chosen One. He knows he’s running a risk, taking on his true form while Dean sleeps; Dean could awaken at any time and be blinded. But Castiel has come to realize he needs to give the comfort as much as Dean needs to receive it. And so he sheds his human skin and wraps his wings around Dean and offers him as much warmth, and comfort and peace as he can.
