When you have a multi season, multi disk TVs show have you ever noticed that in say season 1 you may have a disk that says season 1 volume 3 disk 4. Why is there a volume 3? What does that means?

real life, buh zuh, blah blah blah, idgi, random

The only time I have seen "volume" is when the season is split. Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea's seasons are all split, i.e. S4, Volume 2, Disc 3 or S2, Volume 1, Disc 1 (or) when they might repackage and you get both volumes in DVD set.

I think I've seen a few tv shows like that, but never paid attention.

I would think that it was done that way if the episodes within the season weren't being released in order that they aired, so they were given volume numbers?

I think it happens when a Season is released in several volumes. The Merlin series is usually released in two volumes, they release the first 6 episodes while the series is still being aired and the second volume (which contains the rest of the season) is usually released a few weeks after the show has finished airing.
