I have a decision to make.
My local theatre is holding auditions tomorrow for the musical Rent. My favourite musical of all time, the one I crossed the pond to see because they don't show it here in the west end. (Well they do, but it's the stupid redux version) I don't know whether I should go for it.
I'm not a great singer. My voice is fine if it's a a chorus, but solo, I suck. Also, the audition asks for a modern dramatic monologue preferably in an american/new york accent. Now I could do a monologue, but I don't know any modern ones, which means I'd have to learn one in the space of 24 hours, and my accents suck! I'll start off Welsh, and procede though Irish, Scottish, Austrailian and South African, all the while trying to sound American.
Also the theatre group that's running it are charging £10 for the audition and then if you get in, a further £250 to "cover costs". Now call me crazy, but I thought that if you appeared in a show, you should get paid for it. Not the other way round.
However despite all those bad points about it, it's RENT! I've watched the movie countless times, listened to the Broadway soundtrack endlessly and spent over £800 just to watch it live! It's RENT! Even if I just had the role of 'Streetsweeper' I'd be happy.
I shall be thinking on this all day. To make it even more tempting, I'll be at the theatre anyway for the final rehearsal of another show which opens on Monday. So every time I walk to the bar, I'll be walking past the auditions.
Gah!
(On an unrelated note Happy Valentine's Day or Single Awareness Day depending on your view)
