“Bella? Are you alright?”
Seriously, the girl’s face was bright red and she was trembling even though there wasn’t a cloud in the sky and the air was still and warm.
“Is she choking?” Emily anxiously asked Sam when Bella didn’t respond to Paul’s question.
Bella’s glazed eyes focused on everyone circled around the picnic table peering at her worriedly. “It’s just….,” she gasped trying to speak coherently. “It’s….bugs.”
“Bugs?” Kim said incredulously. “A bug..bit you?”
Bella felt the breeze from Jacob’s muffled laugh on her thigh from under the picnic table. Really, had no one noticed his disappearance? Half the people at this table had heightened senses and none of them had seen him slither down under the table from his end of the bench? Nor had they seen her eyes grow wide and her body twitch when she felt what he was up to. Cheeky wolf.
“Was it a mosquito?” Embry asked her between gulps of Emily’s homemade potato salad.
Bella shook her head as Jacob rearranged her skirt over her thighs.
“Maybe it was a spider; you’d better hope it wasn’t a spider. My grandfather got bit by one of those suckers last year and his arm swelled up to twice its size,” Quil informed her while wiping a dab of bbq sauce off the corner of Claire’s cheek.
It was about this time that Jacob surreptitiously slid back into his seat next to Bella at the end of the bench with a guilelessly innocent expression on his face. His reappearance was met with stunned silence and open mouths.
“So,” Embry finally broke the silence with a huge smirk on his face. “Did you happen to notice anything under there that could have bit Bella?”
Jacob thought for a minute. “I think it was……a dragon.”
