My year in fic (2009)

After concentrating almost exclusively on journalistic and professional writing for the past few years, I decided to branch out a little and started writing fanfiction for the first time, mostly for Boomtown but there is an old JAG one I had to get off my chest...

My stories:

Dear Harm - Unlike 99% of JAG fans, I loved Jordi and wanted to give her some closure before she uncermoniously kicked the bucket, although the episode in which she died was one of the last good ones (yet somehow the show managed to drag on for another four years).

Fall to Pieces - This angsty post-rehab David McNorris fic came about while I was listening to Velvet Revolver.

The Rat - This is probably one for the Boomtown diehards. It's told from the POV of Vince Manzani who only appeared in two episodes but played a highly significant part in the context of the series. That said, I think it still works as a short story in its own right.

David and David - Boomtown's favourite lawyer David McNorris is tormented by his dad who tells him that Wisteria Lane's not-so-favourite killer Dave Williams is his half brother. Drama, suspense, and occasionally hilarity ensue. :P

My favourite story this year: David and David... I think I learnt a lot while writing it.

Story most under-appreciated by the universe, in my opinion: either The Rat or Dear Harm, possibly because neither of them focus on main characters in their respective fandoms.

Most fun story: David and David... the titular characters and their father were a joy to work with and flesh out.

Stories I never thought I'd write: David and David, The Rat

Hardest story to write: David and David

Biggest disappointment: that Boomtown wasn't a bigger hit (which would mean more fic writers and readers), although I don't know if that counts as a disappointment since I was surprised to find a fanfic community for it at all.

Biggest surprise: I started writing fanfic! Also, the way Kerry became so pivotal in David and David because when I first conceptualised the fic idea there were no OCs.

Looking back, did you write more fic than you thought you would this year, less, or about what you'd predicted?: More, since I wasn't expecting to write any.

Did you take any writing risks this year? What did you learn from them?: David and David was my first multi-chapter fic, my first story told through a series of POVs, and come to think of it, my first fic with actual plot. :P So naturally it was a big growth story for me as a writer.

Did you meet last year's goals?: Didn't have any goals.

Do you have any goals for the coming year?: Not really in terms of fanfic; I've got some Boomtown and NCIS oneshots in mind, but I'll just see how things play out.
