Perhaps he was going to sit in it, but then he saw a spider on the seat and got scared. He ran off because he can't afford to pay for the damages.

... Or it could have been a random act of violence, possibly gang-related. I like my explanation better, though.

Nor did I but I would not be surprised if, during a curse, the coffee and tea-drinkers of the City became notably more militant and declare all-out war on traitorous cafes that serve both.
