Sam had been through one hell of a night.
First off, the world was ending. (And yeah, that was an ongoing thing, but that didn't mean he couldn't use it to emphasize how crappy his night was.) It was pretty much entirely his fault- thank you everyone for constantly reminding him- and it didn't seem like anything he and Dean did was slowing it down.

To buy Sam enough time to escape.
He stood in the banquet room of the Elysian fields hotel for a very, very long time, his mind looping over what had happened. Lucifer had him. Had him dead to fucking rights and it was okay. Better to die at the hands of a beloved brother than anyone else. His grace flaring around the warped chill of Lucifer's. Brother.
And Lucifer stopped. Pressed a kiss to his forehead and was gone in a rush of powerful wings.
Gabriel was at a complete loss.
When he finally shook himself out of his reverie, it was at least a few hours later and he figured he'd better make sure that the Winchesters hadn't managed to wrap their precious car around a telephone pole somewhere along the way. Sure, the Enochian sigils carved in their ribs kept them off angelic radar (nice thinking Cas), but the Impala was easy enough to track.
He'd been splashing some water on his face, the act helping to clear his thoughts when he heard the brothers finally stagger inside.
"Nice accommodations you two've got going on."

"Is....is this some kind of trick?"
Because he'd rather find out now than convince himself Gabriel was alive only to have him ripped from them again.

"Sit down before you two meatheads fall down." And with a quick flare of grace, two comfortable chairs manifest just beneath the brothers. "I don't know where my brother went. But he left. Probably off to continue his epic tantrum."

"He-"
An overwhelming sense of relief rushed over the younger Winchester as Gabriel's words sank in.
Lucifer had just left. He hadn't hurt Gabriel.
"You're okay?"

He was fine.
Gabriel forced a smile. "Peachy. Just this side of keen. You two, on the other hand, look like hell. Get some sleep. We're hitting the road in the morning."
The only sound of protest Dean made was a soft snore from the chair.

He considered what the angel said for a moment before lifting his head, because wait a second:
"We? You're coming with us?"

He was just happy he'd be getting a good night's sleep, okay?
And maybe because he'd be seeing a lot more of Gabriel.
"Night," he called, his voice muffled from the pillow he'd decided to mush his face into.

So after a few hours of watching over the exhausted hunters, Gabriel settled himself on the bed beside Sam. The hunter was warm and the glow of his soul was almost comforting.
"Good night, kiddo."
Before his eyes closed, a parting whisper in Enochian. "Good night, brother."

It amazed him how much more soundly he slept with someone next to him, and the change was obvious in his expression as his face completely relaxed.

But he wasn't exactly expecting to wake up with a face full of Sam's hair. Or his arm around Sam's waist. Screw it. He's comfortable. Let Sam wake up and have the freakout. They might have an apocalypse to avert, but right now, he's tucked up against a warm human and he likes it.

When Sam regained consciousness, his first thought was warm. He could feel a strong heat radiating from something beneath him, and he buried his face in the welcome warmth.
It took him a few moments to realize that the source of heat was a person. Now that he was slightly more awake, he could feel the person taking slow, steady breaths, and could hear a slow heartbeat beneath his head.
Almost instantly assuming it was Dean, Sam was more than content to just relax in his brother's embrace.
Until he remembered that Dean had fallen asleep in a chair by the door.
Mortified and too afraid to raise his head, Sam quietly asked "Gabriel?"

And Gabriel steadfastly refuses to move. Sam is comfortable, and now that he's there, he likes the press of the hunter's long lines against him.

"When'd you end up in my bed?" he asked, remembering seeing the angel on the other bed as he'd fallen asleep.
