The Archangel Lives || Can't Trick A Trickster!verse

Sam had been through one hell of a night.

First off, the world was ending. (And yeah, that was an ongoing thing, but that didn't mean he couldn't use it to emphasize how crappy his night was.) It was pretty much entirely his fault- thank you everyone for constantly reminding him- and it didn't seem like anything he and Dean did was slowing it down.

Gabriel had no idea why he was still alive. He'd even prepared a message for the brothers for after his heroic demise when he decided to face down Lucifer and buy them enough time to escape.

To buy Sam enough time to escape.

He stood in the banquet room of the Elysian fields hotel for a very, very long time, his mind looping over what had happened. Lucifer had him. Had him dead to fucking rights and it was okay. Better to die at the hands of a beloved brother than anyone else. His grace flaring around the warped chill of Lucifer's. Brother.

And Lucifer stopped. Pressed a kiss to his forehead and was gone in a rush of powerful wings.

Gabriel was at a complete loss.

When he finally shook himself out of his reverie, it was at least a few hours later and he figured he'd better make sure that the Winchesters hadn't managed to wrap their precious car around a telephone pole somewhere along the way. Sure, the Enochian sigils carved in their ribs kept them off angelic radar (nice thinking Cas), but the Impala was easy enough to track.

He'd been splashing some water on his face, the act helping to clear his thoughts when he heard the brothers finally stagger inside.

"Nice accommodations you two've got going on."

I'm glad you think so haha willneversayyes May 5 2012, 21:32:48 UTC
Sam stood in the doorway, absolutely frozen. His brain just kept repeating We left him to die, we left him to die, welefthimtodie, convinced that the angel wasn't standing in front of him.

"Is....is this some kind of trick?"

Because he'd rather find out now than convince himself Gabriel was alive only to have him ripped from them again.

"Too tired for tricks, Sammikins." Gabriel drops bonelessly onto one of the lumpy motel beds. He shifts, frowns and a second later he appears to sink into a far plusher mattress. "There. Better."

"Sit down before you two meatheads fall down." And with a quick flare of grace, two comfortable chairs manifest just beneath the brothers. "I don't know where my brother went. But he left. Probably off to continue his epic tantrum."

Sam can't take his eyes off the archangel, barely even aware of the new furniture or his brother gratefully collapsing into the chair behind him.

"He-"

An overwhelming sense of relief rushed over the younger Winchester as Gabriel's words sank in.

Lucifer had just left. He hadn't hurt Gabriel.

"You're okay?"

People didn't just ask about his well being. He's an archangel. He's always fine. Just fine. Not aching thinking about his brother, or somewhat rattled at his near-death experience, or even grieving for the pagan deities he'd called friends.

He was fine.

Gabriel forced a smile. "Peachy. Just this side of keen. You two, on the other hand, look like hell. Get some sleep. We're hitting the road in the morning."

The only sound of protest Dean made was a soft snore from the chair.

Sam slowly made his way over to the bed Gabriel isn't occupying, flopping onto the uncomfortable surface silently.

He considered what the angel said for a moment before lifting his head, because wait a second:

"We? You're coming with us?"

An instant later the bed is soft, plush and a lot less uncomfortable. "Go to sleep, Moose. You mooks just picked up an archangel in your corner." He rolls a shoulder. "For as long as I'm standing anyway."

Sam sighed softly as he got more comfortable on the bed, and he'd full out deny the smile on his face later.

He was just happy he'd be getting a good night's sleep, okay?

And maybe because he'd be seeing a lot more of Gabriel.

"Night," he called, his voice muffled from the pillow he'd decided to mush his face into.

Contrary to what the Winchesters knew of angels, some of them did sleep. It wasn't necessary, but sometimes laying down and just going away for a little while was a welcome respite.

So after a few hours of watching over the exhausted hunters, Gabriel settled himself on the bed beside Sam. The hunter was warm and the glow of his soul was almost comforting.

"Good night, kiddo."

Before his eyes closed, a parting whisper in Enochian. "Good night, brother."

Did we wanna cut it off here? Seems like a good stopping point. willneversayyes May 6 2012, 02:42:27 UTC
Sam instinctively curled towards the body beside him, years of sharing a bed with Dean making the shift second nature.

It amazed him how much more soundly he slept with someone next to him, and the change was obvious in his expression as his face completely relaxed.

We can keep them going in the morning? low_key_angel May 6 2012, 02:50:12 UTC
The sleep had been barely above a light doze, but Gabriel responded as he felt the warmth of another body curl close into his.

But he wasn't exactly expecting to wake up with a face full of Sam's hair. Or his arm around Sam's waist. Screw it. He's comfortable. Let Sam wake up and have the freakout. They might have an apocalypse to avert, but right now, he's tucked up against a warm human and he likes it.

When Sam regained consciousness, his first thought was warm. He could feel a strong heat radiating from something beneath him, and he buried his face in the welcome warmth.

It took him a few moments to realize that the source of heat was a person. Now that he was slightly more awake, he could feel the person taking slow, steady breaths, and could hear a slow heartbeat beneath his head.

Almost instantly assuming it was Dean, Sam was more than content to just relax in his brother's embrace.

Until he remembered that Dean had fallen asleep in a chair by the door.

Mortified and too afraid to raise his head, Sam quietly asked "Gabriel?"

His voice is muffled in Sam's hair, but still quietly amused. "Was wondering when you were gonna wake up, Sasquatch. At least you didn't drool on me, that's appreciated."

And Gabriel steadfastly refuses to move. Sam is comfortable, and now that he's there, he likes the press of the hunter's long lines against him.

Sam made a small noise that sounded roughly like an amused snort, but made no move to get up. He had no intentions of moving until he absolutely had to, and even then he'd do so reluctantly.

"When'd you end up in my bed?" he asked, remembering seeing the angel on the other bed as he'd fallen asleep.
