Gonna try to start using this as a renovation record again. The last progect was the office. The new one i started was the bathroom last december. so i tore out the old master bath (1/2 bath) and the full bath that were joined. There was massive rotting adn water damage. I repaired/replaced as needed. Then the new plan is to build a master bathroom off of the master bedroom and make a 1/2 bath for the main floor. I am going to build the master first. I bought all my fixtures from keller supply and would recommend that to anyone rather than going to home depot. The most impressive of which is the jacuzzi tub. 66"x36" the tub is extra long wide and deep. It has jacuzzi jets with an inline heater and a hot spot for the back of your neck when you lay in the tub. With my dads help we got the tub in place and i was ready to start tiling
Never really tiled around a tub where it had to be waterproof, so i read a bunch of books and talked to matt about how to do it. He gave me some great advice on type of tile, how to seal the hardie board and how to get a finished edge on the tile. One of the things he mentioned was bullnosing the edges around the open cuts, most tile places will do it and the place i went to was no excpetion. So i cut all my pieces and took them to the store and told them 4 times not to cut the tile, but just bull nose it. I get a call the next day telling me the cut them. Boy howdy was i mad. I went to the store and camly told them how mad i was. They gave me twice as many replacement tiles and then did the bullnosing for 1/2 price. Now whenever i got i great great service.
I got all the tiles in and discouvered that vertically grouting is much harder than horizontal, also the pre-made motor was easier to stick on the wall than the stuff you mix. It was stickier and easier to use. I bought the "epoxy " style grout which they say is the best kind. I had to buy it small batches though cause it only has a 1 hour working time and vertical grouting is much slower.
With the tub and tiles in place I connected the fixtures and gave it a test toast. Works good and misty loves it. Most important things to remember: the tiles are not all the same size they vary by + or - 1/16, so your lines will not and cannot be perfect. when verticall tiling work in small batches and be extra thorough when cleaning cause if you missed some you have to use acid to get it off. Most importantly, the quick fix is never ever faster or better than the right fix. i dunno when ill ever learn that leasson.
The next step is to get the floor in. Ive moved the toilet and prepped the surface. I need to lay down the heater first then lay thinset over the top. Never done that before so well see how it goes.
