" 'Twas the night of midterms "

'Twas the night of midterms, and all through the states
Not a conservative was happy, not even their dates.

The votes were cast by those of us who care,
In hopes that George Bush would no longer be there.

The conservatives fought on, the best that they could,
In hopes that their goals would be understood.

And the liberals were gruff,
they fought hard, they fought tough.

But the choice would be the voters, the decision theirs,
For the losing party there would only be tears.

All of their votes, were cast and were counted,
As the totals came in, the democratic leads mounted.

The democrats won all but a few races,
Made giddy by the look on their opponents faces.

They had won the house, their gains were large,
but the senate they needed as well, to be completely in charge.

Throughout the night the results came in,
but the democrat leads in Montana and Virginia were razor thin.

A recount was ordered, no conclusion was made,
but the democrats could see the republican fog fade.

The senate was theirs, they new it to be true,
and in their eyes danced a nation born anew.

Another surprise they beheld the next day, to be sure,
Donald H. Rumsfeld had resigned, secretary of defense he was no more.

The democrats beheld their triumph, things had finally turned right,
so to all I say "Happy days and good night."
