Muslims are the new . . . Jews? Commies? Queers?
Sad and disturbing article in today's Times about how Muslims are feeling dissed by Barack Hussein Obama. Apparently headscarfgate was part of a larger pattern of avoiding Muslim events and leaders -- not even sending a campaign staffer. Meanwhile he is sucking up to Jews big time. I don't see any Arabic-character "Barack Obama" buttons on his web site.
I'm sure Amerikan Muslims are feeling much the way I (as a queer) am feeling about Obama right now. Okay, we understand that he has to deal with a whole lot of haters and bigots in order to win this election, but did he have to call the rumor that he is Muslim a "smear"? It's a lot like people vehemently denying that they're gay. It's a lot like his use of the phrase "marriage is between a man and a woman." He could have stated his position without saying it, but he said it anyway.
I hate all the crap people pull in order to get elected. I have the feeling Obama is going to be another Bill Clinton in a lot of ways -- not as progressive as we need him to be, not as progressive as he leads us to expect, and quick to ditch his friends when it's politically expedient.
