"It's a little bit like a present," says Geoffrey, helping him with the next one, "since I didn't give you much unwrapping to do with the other one."

"Didn't need wrapping," says Duck, his voice drifting up from somewhere near Geoffrey's bellybutton. "Lie back."

Geoffrey lies back, taking his hands away and keeping them that way until Duck needs him. He kind of likes being the gift that's unwrapped; the books wouldn't have appreciated it nearly as much.

"Happy Birthday," he says again.

Duck hovers over him, just taking him in before he reaches down to undo the last button and spread the two halves of Geoffrey's shirt wide open. "It is," he answers, touching his fingertips to the warm chest he's uncovered. Pretty soon he's going to have to figure out how to get down to Geoffrey, but at least there's no one at the stage to see a forty-six year old man do a one-armed push-up.
