I went to see the GCC Touring Choir this past Friday...they made a tour stop at a Methodist church about 10 minutes from me. I only recognized maybe 5 names and about 3 faces...sad day, but one of them had been in Koinonia when they came to Cincinnati, so we got to hug and reminisce a little. Big advantage was talking with Dr. Browne, who remembered me (yay!) and said he had recognized me in the audience. I realized how much he affected my conducting and teaching style, which really isn't surprising since he was my first conducting professor and I watched him conduct 3-4 times a week for 4 years. Good times.
My recital is coming up...Sunday, May 29, 3:00 p.m., Wright State University Creative Arts Center...be there if you can! The program is:
MacDowell--Sonata Eroica, movement 1
Schubert--Grand Rondeau for piano four-hands
Brahms--Clarinet Sonata no. 2
Liszt--Die Loreley for voice and piano
Saint-Saens--Piano Trio no. 2, movement 1
(possibly) Mendelssohn--Hexentanz for voice and piano
Sarah (my vocalist) and I have been getting a lot of mileage out of the Liszt...we did it in vocal rep, on HER graduate recital, and we made it to the final round of honors recital, where if we win, we get $1000 or $500 for second, which she has maintained that she will share with me because I kind of, um, picked the piece and asked her to do it...plus it's an art-song, which means the piano and soloist have near-equal importance.
Also...I have no idea if I said anything about this because I sort of haven't updated much in the past, oh, four months...I became the regular weekend organist at a church in downtown Dayton. One on Saturday afternoon/evening, and two on Sunday (one mid-morning, one evening). Much more relaxing than full-time in Cincinnati, plus the pastor generally lets me do my own thing and there's no choir involved.
