Aw, I'm sure your tail looks sweet! Don't put yourself down!

[SWEET? So unmanly... He would rather have had something cool like a shark tail, or Anathema's eel tail. Instead, he looks like a big speckled yellow goldfish. He feels like he looks like a GIRL.]

Even if it makes me slow, and inefficient as well as tired, I want my legs back! Or I'd at least want not to be brightly colored [Translation: What did YOU turn into?]

Well, we'll be getting our legs back soon enough. [ SIIIIGH. why does everyone have to be party poopers? ]

But bright colors are the best! Mine's all multicolored and shiny! [ ever see those rainbowfish books? yeah like that ]

[Gau is the definition of party pooping. It just comes with the territory as the one paper-writer and organizer for a disorganized pinkhaired samurai.]

Well...maybe yours looks better. Mine looks bad with my vest. It just feels like l stand out too much like this. And it's not really fair to the merpeople if they have to leave their homes and live like humans.
And I don't think we can get home on the caravan if we can't breathe or leave the water.

You could always accessorize! Take attention away from the garishness and all that! You could make it work!

--Oh... that's true, though. But, I think some of them want to live on the surface! I mean, that's what it was like in The Little Mermaid, right?

[Takes that too seriously] With all respect, Donut-san, the Little Mermaid is a movie! These are real people, who don't deserve to suffer and drown, or start over with new lives on the surface! If there's a way to help them, we should look for it without hesitation!

You sound like Raikou-san. All my spare clothing is on the caravan. I looked out of place from the start, going in in my clothes...
[because he's self-conscious about skinny nerd-dom]
It's not that it's garish, so much. It just feels...too different. [he can't think of a better way to explain it.]

...But... mermaids and stuff weren't real to us before we got here... What's the big deal in comparing them to a movie?? Besides, a lot of them ate that weed stuff that we had before we went underwater! Not that I condone partaking in drugs.

Well, I like trying different things! Keep an open mind, and all that!

B-Because just the fact something's not real to us doesn't mean they're not real people here! [It takes being dropped into a secret ninja society to actually learn something that dubiously wise when you're Gau.]

What? Drugs?! That's totally unsavory!

[a pause, suspicious, and trying to think] What...kinds of different things? [Wary voice...] Those horrible drugs you were talking about earlier...?

[does not computer that gillyweed is your "drug" in this conversation, Donut.]

Yeah, so the movie could be real here, too! [ makes sense to him ]

You know, stuff I've never-- [ oh he catches that bit about drugs ] What?! No! I don't do drugs!!

H-Huh? [You're thinking on totally different pages. Gau's too surprised to even pretend to sound pissed to cover up how easily flustered he is.],/small>

Drugs are a filthy habit, detrimental to the body, and to the spirit! Donut-san is clearly sensible to avoid them!
