You have a really active imagination pal. I wasn't even thinking murder plot until you said something.

I like to think of it as merely observation skills. If you think about it, it makes sense.

Waking up in a dungeon. No real recollection of how we ended up here. All we know is that we could be in the middle of nowhere.

Some very angry cell-keeper claiming one of us is a thief and he'll release us after we return some unknown item of his. Of course he'll release us, sure.

Problem is, we have no idea what he's missing. Typical. It's a reason to keep us locked up in here, frantically searching for this "item," putting the blame on total strangers. Instilling a feeling of panic. Makes picking us off that much more gratifying for him.

Very textbook, really. [ the sound of him taking a slow drag ]

[LONG PAUSE]

I think you've seen too many horror movies. Way too many.

And anyway, if you think that's all going to happen, then why the hell are you so calm about it?

Fiction always imitates reality. I've seen cases like these before. Though, I can't deny that I love a good movie every now and then.

Why panic? That would only cause unnecessary stress. Not to mention the noise. There's an answer to this puzzle. It's just a matter of finding it.

"Cases?" What are you, a cop?

[erugh. so optimistic.] There's a different between not being calm and panicking. You make it sound like you wake up in medieval dungeons all the time.

Oh, I didn't introduce myself yet, have I? How rude of me.

FBI Special Agent, Francis York Morgan. [ a pause ] Please, just call me York. It's what everyone calls me.

To answer your question, let's just say I've seen my share of the bizarre and surreal. Being that my expertise is serial murders, I tend to happen across far stranger situations.

Uh. Kurosaki Ichigo. Ichigo is fine.

[ok he's curious] What's been stranger than this? [not that he can talk...]

A pleasure, Ichigo. Are you Japanese? Forgive me if that's a bit forward; Zach and I enjoy a few horror movies from Japan.

[ another drag ] Well, the last case I worked on was far stranger than this. It was a string of cult murders in a small town in Washington. The perpetrator believed by raping and murdering the young women he preyed upon, he could gain eternal life.

He cut their tongues out and stuffed them full of red seeds from a tree that was common in the area. Some sort of spiritual belief that the tree could grant his wishes. You know how those things go.

Turns out he had some issues with his mother. Beat him relentlessly. If not for what he did, I'd feel sorry for the bastard.

Yeah, I am. [small snort] Japanese horror movies? Really?

[long pause as he listens, well his question just got answered but!, then he sounds suitably disgusted] That's fucked up. What happened to the asshole?

Yep. Last one we watched was Ringu 2. Very nice.

Ah... [ he falls silent for a moment, taking another long drag ] I did my duty as an officer. He reacted violently, he was armed, so he left me no choice.

I shot him.

Ringu 2? That wasn't even scary- not that the first one was, either. Did you actually see the Japanese version or the American one? Though both of them really sucked...

[small pause, accompanied by him shifting wherever he is in the cell] I see.

[AWKWARD PAUSE, TIME TO LET THAT DROP, BUT he sighs] Any smart ideas on how we can get the hell out of here? These bars aren't loose.

[VOICE] callmeyork July 2 2010, 06:35:48 UTC
The Japanese version, of course. And horror movies don't really startle us. It's more just for the fun of watching the storyline unfold.

[ seems like he's more than happy to let the topic drop FOR ONCE ]

Hmn. In structures these old, there's usually a mechanism somewhere within reach. A real security flaw. Perhaps if there actually is a thief among us, they'd be skilled in lock picking, as well. [ he chuckles ]

The sequel made even less sense than the first one. I don't really get why the kid had powers.

[snorts] We could only be so lucky. We'd have a better chance just trying to break the door down in unison.

That's just the charm of Japanese horror. It's quirky and nonsensical at times, but still unsettling at others. A perfect mix.

Well, that could work. Then again, there could be booby traps outside. Might want to take some precaution before charging headlong into matters like these.

If you say so.

Precaution against booby traps? For all we know they're invisible, and we won't know unless we go out and see. Even if there are booby traps there's no guarantee we could do more than outrun them.

And I do.

Suit yourself, then. You're still a kid. I suppose it's only natural for you to react without thinking.
