Would someone mind telling me what kind of birds these are? I have never seen the likes of them before.

[pause]

And they get rather upset when you try to pluck them.

They're turkeys. I'd suggest not plucking them and....well, not doing anything to them, but that doesn't seem to work either.

Turkeys? I have never heard of them. Are they edible?

Edible and rather tasty, yes. You've never had any?

No, never. In general, the only meat we ate in Troy came from sheep or bulls. Never from birds.

Well, I'm sure somebody is bound to try and cook one of these up, if they ever stop trying to eat us instead.

Is this typical behavior for these birds? If so, I daresay they're far more trouble than they're worth.

No, not normally. I've never seen any that were so aggressive before....

[Cassandra sighs heavily]

I suppose this means magic is involved somehow?

[Anathema will join her there] That or the birds in this world really know how to hold a grudge. I can't say which would be worse.

A grudge would imply we did something to offend. Do you suppose the caravan is traveling through territory sacred to the turkeys?

[small pause. well, given everything else that's happened, sacred turkey grounds probably isn't that strange] It's one theory. Shame there's no one we can ask.

I knew someone in Rowan who could talk to animals. Not that that will help us much here.

Oddly enough, I also knew someone who turned into a bird on occasion.

....turned into one? Really?

It was actually quite unusual. During the day, she was a fully functional, if not somewhat less than confident, witch. At night, she turned into a red bird. Which came in handy when a group of us had to sneak out of the city one night, smuggling a hostage.

Only at night? Was it some sort of curse, or just how her power worked?

A curse, as I recall. I believe she said vampires were responsible.
