Marking the halfway point

Okay. A little over halfway. This week was the fourth week of the six-week fitness bootcamp I started back on President's Day. Hooray!

Overall, I've been doing okay. In week two I woke up one morning with a sore throat that hurt like burning, and I missed a morning. Then, the next week, the cold that evolved from the sore throat turned into a death rattle cough, so I missed another morning. And then, last Thursday we were doing sprints, and about 12 strides in something in my left leg went "pop" and I tumbled to the ground and then limped around for the next three days. So I had to miss that Friday.

No one in the class has a) missed as many days as me or b) is nearly as injury prone as I am. I feel a bit like the girl in the bubble. I have jacked up wrists from all my years at the computer, so much that doing normal pushups makes my fingers numb or achy all day. Thus, I have to do pushups elevated on a fence or a bench or something, while all the other girls are learning to do kick-ass regular ones. I've got asthma, and use my inhaler every morning before class. The first time we did sprints it was about 1/3 of a mile, and at the end of each I thought I'd hyperventilate. Haven't had that happen since, though, and haven't had to use my inhaler during class. And then, of course, there's this dumb leg thing. Another girl had similar pain during another set of sprints, but she miraculously was able to keep running.

I can already tell a difference in my body. This morning I noticed there's a noticeable muscle in my thigh, which dips far more severely than ever before where it meets my knee. Yesterday I wore a short-sleeved shirt, and my friend Chris said he could see some muscle in my arm. My stomach hasn't changed dramatically -- I was already getting definition before the class, and now it's pretty much the same, unless you're actually touching it. When I wash my back in the shower, I can feel more definition in my back. On Sunday I went for a 3.25 mile run with a co-worker, and was able to carry on a conversation the whole way, and to finish in about 33 minutes. It's still slow, but I always run alone, so being able to talk felt like quite an accomplishment!

I've been able to maintain my weight, even though I am starving all the time and have pretty much stopped tracking what I'm eating. I'm hovering between 142-143.

I'm seriously considering doing the next session. With the illness and injury, I'm not going to quite be in the shape I'd like to be when I'm finished, and I think several people at work who're doing it are feeling the same way. If I had to get up and do it myself I'm not sure I could make it, but if there's someone else getting up at 5AM with me, I'll be there.
