Less than 48 hours after he'd been released from the hospital, Alcuin returned home. Dr. Lecter had been correct, and the press frenzy had died down. He had also gotten in touch with Anafiel's attorney, who had come to see him at Dr. Lecter's office and assured him that as Anafiel's legal son, he was entitled to the entirety of his estate despite the current investigation into his death. He said that he would take care of everything, and to let him know if the police bothered him again. Their investigation may have already cleared him by now, he said.

Alcuin had also been correct that Anafiel's friends were keeping their distance, likely concerned about being caught in the scandal.

Now, back at the townhouse, it was as if nothing had happened. The library was completely clean, having first been cleaned by crime scene experts, and then by Anafiel's maid, whom Alcuin had called before he arrived home. If he'd seen a speck of blood he might have lost it.

The place was eerily quiet. First, he curled up on Anafiel's bed and sobbed.

He was still pale and shaken from the outpouring of grief when he opened the door after hearing the doorbell.
